Adam Levine’s Only Country Singer Delivers Explosive Chris Stapleton Cover on The Voice — But His Live Shows Dream Takes a Difficult Turn

Evan James brought a burst of country-rock energy to The Voice Season 30 with a powerful performance of Chris Stapleton’s Midnight Train to Memphis.
The 22-year-old Michigan singer, who is the only country artist on Adam Levine’s team, impressed the coaches with his gritty vocals and commanding stage presence during the competition’s newly introduced Cut Week.
But despite earning enthusiastic praise from Levine and Kelly Clarkson, James faced an uncertain future when the final selections were announced.
Evan James Brings Country-Rock Energy to the Stage

James approached Stapleton’s song with confidence, combining its driving rhythm with his own soulful, rock-influenced vocal style.
Moving across the stage, he delivered a high-energy performance that had the audience standing and dancing along.
His powerful vocals and distinctive rasp helped him put his own stamp on the country hit.
Clarkson was particularly impressed that James could handle such a demanding song at just 22 years old.
“I love your vibe,” she told him, praising both his vocal performance and the determination he displayed toward the end.
She also commended his willingness to fight for a place in the next round.
Adam Levine Discovers Another Side of His Country Singer
Levine admitted that James was continuing to surprise him throughout the competition.

The Maroon 5 frontman highlighted the rasp in his contestant’s voice as one of the qualities he was still discovering.
“I loved your energy. I love that song. I love the way you sang it,” Levine told him.
He later described James as having exploded onto the stage during Cut Week and said he was pleased to have a country artist representing his team.
However, that enthusiasm made the approaching elimination decision especially difficult.
Cut Week Delivers a Disappointing Result
Season 30 introduced Cut Week as a new elimination format, replacing the traditional Knockouts and Playoffs.
Each coach selected two contestants from a team of seven to advance automatically to the Live Shows.
The five remaining singers then performed for one final available position.
Levine initially saved Lexi Stephens and Connor Closs, leaving James competing for the third spot.
Although his Chris Stapleton performance received strong feedback, Levine ultimately selected Dakota Cohen after his rendition of Fuel’s Hemorrhage (In My Hands).
The decision left James outside Team Adam’s three advancing acts.
Evan James Has One Final Chance to Return
Despite the setback, James still has a possible route into the Live Shows.
The competition introduced a public vote allowing one of the 16 eliminated Cut Week contestants to return.
The singer receiving the most votes will join the remaining contestants to complete the Top 13.
The result is scheduled to be revealed when The Voice returns on Monday, November 9, at 9/8c on NBC and Peacock.
For James, the vote represents an opportunity to continue his journey after a performance that demonstrated both his country roots and rock-inspired versatility.
Although Adam Levine chose another contestant for his final team position, Evan James’ energetic Chris Stapleton cover ensured he left a strong impression before the public vote.
