The 1% Club’s Tricky Age Puzzle Sparks Debate as Viewers Insist There Could Be Two Correct Answers
A question on ITV’s The 1% Club sparked debate among viewers after some argued that a contestant’s answer could also be correct, despite the show’s official solution. While the episode’s final puzzle left all three players attempting it empty-handed, an earlier question about a grandfather and grandson’s ages prompted fans to question whether the rules were entirely clear.
Comedian Lee Mack returned to host the Saturday night quiz, which challenges 100 contestants to solve increasingly difficult logic puzzles. The competition begins with a question that 90% of the public are expected to answer correctly, before progressing towards the notoriously difficult final 1% challenge, which only one in 100 people is expected to solve within 30 seconds.
The 30% Question That Divided Viewers
The debate centred on a question about Amrit and his grandfather, who share the same birthday. Their birthday balloons had become mixed up, and contestants were asked to work out Amrit’s age if his grandfather was three times older than him.
The correct answer given on the show was 26, making his grandfather 78.
However, not everyone agreed that the answer was as straightforward as it appeared. One viewer contacted the programme’s official Instagram account, explaining that their partner was convinced that 29 could also be correct.
The viewer pointed out that the balloons shown in the question had no strings attached, suggesting that the number 6 could be turned upside down to become a 9. Under that interpretation, Amrit could be 29 and his grandfather 87, since 29 multiplied by three equals 87.
The viewer asked whether their partner’s alternative answer should have allowed them to remain in the game.
The discussion raised a question about how contestants should interpret visual details in a puzzle, particularly when the image itself appears to allow more than one reading.
Could You Solve the Final 1% Question?
While the age puzzle generated debate, the episode’s final question proved too difficult for the remaining contestants who chose to attempt it.
The challenge was to identify the next number in a sequence:

As with every question on the show, contestants had just 30 seconds to work out the pattern. Despite reaching the final stage, all three players who took on the challenge failed to find the correct answer and left without any winnings.
The sequence may look like a collection of unrelated numbers at first, but its solution depends on paying close attention to the wording of the question itself.
Lee Mack Reveals the Hidden Pattern
Lee explained that the numbers corresponded to the number of letters in the words used in the question.
For example, the word “in” contains two letters, while “this” contains four and “sequence” contains eight. The next word, “next”, contains four letters, providing the key to continuing the pattern.
The puzzle therefore required contestants to focus not on mathematical calculations, but on the language used to present the question.
With only half a minute to spot the connection, it was another example of how The 1% Club turns seemingly simple instructions into challenging tests of logic and observation.
