Channing Tatum’s New Crime Thriller Josephine Unveils Its First Trailer Ahead of November Release

Channing Tatum is taking on one of his most grounded and emotionally demanding roles yet in Josephine, a crime drama that explores the devastating impact of witnessing violence through the eyes of a child. The film’s first full trailer has arrived, offering a glimpse of a tense family story led by Tatum, Gemma Chan and newcomer Mason Reeves.

Directed by Beth de Araújo, Josephine centres on a young girl whose life is changed after she witnesses a crime in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. As her parents struggle to help her cope with the aftermath, the family must also navigate the difficult process of having her recount what she saw in court.

The film is scheduled to open in US cinemas on November 20, 2026, following its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

Josephine Trailer Reveals a Family Facing an Unimaginable Ordeal

The trailer, released by Sumerian Pictures, introduces Tatum as Damien and Chan as his wife, Claire. Their daughter, Josephine, played by Mason Reeves, becomes the central figure in a traumatic experience that threatens to reshape the family’s life.

The footage keeps the details of the crime itself under wraps, instead focusing on its aftermath. Josephine must explain what she witnessed to adults and prepare to testify in court, placing her in a situation no child should have to face.

Why Sundance Winner 'Josephine' Is Already an Early Oscars Contender

For Damien and Claire, the challenge is not simply helping their daughter through the experience. They must also watch as she is asked to revisit a frightening event while trying to protect her from further emotional harm.

Rather than presenting itself as a conventional crime thriller focused solely on solving a case, Josephine appears to place the emotional consequences of violence at the centre of its story.

A Personal Story for Director Beth de Araújo

The film carries particular significance for de Araújo, who drew inspiration from her own childhood experiences. That personal connection has shaped the project’s approach to a difficult subject, with the director aiming to portray the lasting effects of trauma with care and sensitivity.

Josephine' Trailer & Release Date: Gemma Chan & Channing Tatum In Sundance Hit

Gemma Chan previously discussed the importance of the story, explaining that she wanted to do justice to the material and its deeply personal origins. The film examines not only the experience of the child at its centre, but also the fears, conflicting emotions and difficult decisions faced by the parents trying to help her recover.

The result is a family drama in which the consequences of violence extend well beyond the initial incident, affecting how the characters understand safety, justice and their responsibilities to one another.

Josephine Earned Major Recognition at Sundance

Channing Tatum, Mason Reeves, and Gemma Chan in 'Josephine.'

Before its wider theatrical release, Josephine made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2026, where it received two of the festival’s major honours: the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. Dramatic film.

The recognition brought additional attention to de Araújo’s film and its young lead, Mason Reeves, whose performance anchors the story. Tatum and Chan also received praise for their portrayals of parents struggling to support their daughter while confronting their own fears and uncertainty.

For Tatum, the role represents a departure from the action-heavy and comedic projects for which he is widely known. While he is set to return as Gambit in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday later in 2026 and reunite with Jonah Hill for 24 Jump Street in 2027, Josephine offers a markedly different kind of performance.

Rather than relying on spectacle, the film focuses on the emotional strain of parenthood when a family faces an experience it cannot simply put behind it.

When Will Josephine Be Released?

Sumerian Pictures is scheduled to bring Josephine to US cinemas on November 20, 2026, initially through a limited theatrical release. A wider nationwide rollout is planned for December 4.

With its award-winning Sundance debut, a cast led by Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan, and a story rooted in the lasting psychological impact of violence, Josephine is shaping up to be one of Tatum’s most emotionally challenging films to date.

The first trailer offers a glimpse of a story that puts a family’s struggle at its centre, asking what happens when a child loses her sense of safety — and how the people who love her can begin to help her find it again.
