The 1% Club: Simple Mirror-Letter Question Eliminates 14 Contestants and Adds £14,000 to Jackpot
A seemingly straightforward alphabet question proved surprisingly difficult on The 1% Club, sending 14 contestants out of the game and boosting the prize fund by £14,000.
Hosted by Lee Mack, the popular ITV quiz show challenges players to think beyond traditional general knowledge, testing their logic, reasoning and common sense instead. But as one episode available on ITVX demonstrated, even a question about familiar capital letters can catch contestants off guard when the pressure is on.

Can You Solve the 30-Second Letter Challenge?

The challenge began with a statement from Lee Mack: “‘A’ is the first capital letter in the alphabet that looks the same in the mirror.”
He then posed the question that left a significant number of players struggling: “What is the second?”
Contestants had just 30 seconds to work out which capital letter came next in the sequence of letters that retain their appearance when reflected in a mirror.
Despite the seemingly simple wording, 14 players either failed to identify the correct letter or chose to pass rather than risk getting the question wrong.
The answer was H, and the unsuccessful contestants’ exits added £14,000 to the jackpot, taking the total prize money to £49,000.
How The 1% Club Works

Since launching on ITV in 2022, The 1% Club has become a hit with viewers thanks to its distinctive approach to quiz-show challenges.
Rather than relying primarily on general knowledge, the programme brings 100 contestants together in the studio to tackle puzzles designed to test their problem-solving abilities. Each question is associated with the percentage of the public expected to answer it correctly, with players given only 30 seconds to respond.
Every contestant eliminated adds £1,000 to the potential jackpot. The competition continues through increasingly challenging rounds until the remaining players face the final question, designed to be answered correctly by just one per cent of the public.
The format rewards clear thinking under pressure, but the mirror-letter challenge showed how easily a short question can derail a player’s progress.
ITV Plans a Major Format Change

The letter puzzle comes as The 1% Club prepares for a significant scheduling and format shake-up.
Instead of airing in its usual Saturday-night slot, the programme is set to appear on weeknights, with episodes broadcast back-to-back over five consecutive nights.
The revised format will also introduce a rollover feature, allowing prize money to carry over from one episode to the next. This creates the possibility of winning as much as £500,000 by correctly answering the final 1% question in the last show of the week.
With tougher puzzles, limited time and a growing jackpot at stake, the show’s upcoming episodes promise to put contestants’ reasoning skills to the test.
The 1% Club continues on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
