The 1% Club Contestant Wins £100,000 For Charity As Former Footballer Clarke Carlisle Cracks The Final Question In Soccer Aid Special
Viewers of The 1% Club were left stunned when former footballer Clarke Carlisle correctly answered the show’s final question, securing an incredible £100,000 for UNICEF in a special Soccer Aid episode.
Hosted by Lee Mack, the ITV quiz welcomed 100 contestants, including several familiar faces from television and sport. Among the star-studded lineup were Jill Scott, Iain Stirling, Paddy McGuinness and Tommy Fury, all hoping to help raise money for the charity.
However, as the competition progressed, only two contestants remained in contention for the jackpot: Carlisle, who previously played for QPR, Watford and Leeds, and comedian Lloyd Griffith, a former host of Soccer AM.

Clarke Carlisle And Lloyd Griffith Face The Final Challenge
By the time they reached the decisive 1% question, Carlisle and Griffith had already secured £10,000 for UNICEF. Carlisle still had his pass available, adding another £1,000 to the guaranteed total.
Unlike the usual format, the £11,000 was safe regardless of whether they answered the final question correctly. The remaining challenge offered them the opportunity to take the charity’s winnings all the way to £100,000.
Lee Mack presented the pair with a question about the opening verse of the original version of Three Lions, the football anthem associated with England’s national team.
“In the opening verse to the original version of Three Lions, what TWO words feature exactly three times in the lyrics?” he asked.
With just 30 seconds on the clock, the contestants had to study the lyrics displayed on screen and identify the two words that appeared precisely three times.
The verse read:
“Everyone seems to know the score, they’ve seen it all before
They just know, they’re so sure
That England’s gonna throw it away, gonna blow it away
But I know they can play, ’cause I remember…”
It was a deceptively difficult challenge, requiring the pair to pay close attention to the wording rather than simply recognise the familiar lyrics.

The Former Footballer Gets It Right
When the time came to give their answers, Griffith, 41, admitted that he had misread the question.
Carlisle, 45, meanwhile, put forward “it” and “know” as his two answers.
His response proved correct, earning an enormous £100,000 for UNICEF and bringing the Soccer Aid special to a memorable conclusion.
Viewers quickly took to X to celebrate the former footballer’s achievement, with many praising his performance and expressing their delight at the result.
One viewer wrote: “Clarke Carlisle you Brainiac!! Well done!”

Another commented: “Absolutely delighted for Clarke! Always had a brilliant brain – but came close to losing him!”
A third fan added: “Clarke Carlisle is a genius!!”
The reaction reflected the excitement surrounding Carlisle’s achievement, with viewers celebrating both his successful answer and the substantial amount raised for charity.

Could You Have Solved Another Tricky 1% Club Question?
While Carlisle managed to crack the final challenge, another question on the regular version of The 1% Club proved difficult for a group of contestants, eliminating 18 players.
This time, the challenge centred on the alphabet. Contestants were shown four words and asked to identify the one that did not contain three consecutive letters in alphabetical order.
The options were:
- A. Unopenable
- B. Understandable
- C. Unquestionable
- D. Undefineable
The correct answer was C, Unquestionable.
The other three words each contained a sequence of consecutive letters: Unopenable included “NOP”, Understandable contained “RST”, and Undefineable featured “DEF”.
It was another reminder of how easily a seemingly straightforward question can catch contestants out when they overlook a small detail.

The 1% Club airs on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
