King Harald V of Norway Dies at 89 After 35-Year Reign as King Charles Mourns His ‘Dear Cousin’
King Harald V of Norway has died at the age of 89, bringing to an end a 35-year reign that spanned enormous social change, moments of national tragedy and some of the most difficult periods faced by Norway’s modern royal family.
The Norwegian Royal Court announced that the monarch died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet at 6:35 a.m. on Friday, August 28.
“It is with deep grief that we announce that His Majesty King Harald has passed away,” the palace said.
Harald had been hospitalized earlier in August while being treated for haemolytic anaemia, a condition in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than the body can replace them. His health subsequently deteriorated after he developed a bacterial infection in his bloodstream.
The palace described his condition as very serious on Thursday as members of the Norwegian royal family gathered at the hospital.
His son, Crown Prince Haakon, has now succeeded him as Norway’s monarch, with the new king expected to use the regnal name Haakon VIII. Haakon’s daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, becomes heir to the throne.
King Charles Mourns a ‘Much-Loved Kinsman and Friend’
Among the first major royal tributes was a deeply personal message from King Charles III, who described Harald as his “dear cousin.”
Charles and Queen Camilla said they had learned of his death with “the most profound sadness.”
“For thirty-five years, King Harald served his people with unwavering dedication, guiding Norway through times of great change with warmth and humility,” Charles said.
The British monarch remembered Harald as a “much-loved kinsman and friend” whose kindness, compassion and sense of duty had been felt “across the sea and across the decades.”
“The Queen and I extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Queen Sonja and all her family, as Britain shares in Norway’s grief at this time of such heartbreaking loss,” he concluded.
The royal families of Britain and Norway have unusually close historical links.
Harald and Charles were second cousins once removed through their shared descent from King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra of Denmark, and the Norwegian monarch maintained close personal relationships with several generations of the British royal family.
Norway Gathers to Mourn
News of Harald’s deteriorating health had already prompted an emotional response throughout Norway before his death was announced.
Crowds gathered outside the Royal Palace in Oslo, laying flowers and waiting for updates.
By Friday morning, a growing sea of tributes had appeared outside the palace as Norwegians came together to remember a king who had become a familiar national presence over more than three decades.
Harald had consistently enjoyed strong public support and was widely regarded as a stabilizing figure whose role often became especially visible when Norway faced tragedy.
One of the defining moments of his reign came after the July 22, 2011 terrorist attacks in Oslo and on Utøya, when 77 people were killed.
In the aftermath, Harald became an important voice of collective grief, meeting survivors and bereaved families and addressing a stunned nation.
The Royal Court itself has described him as a figure who represented Norway in both moments of celebration and periods of profound sorrow.
A Childhood Shaped by War
Harald was born on February 21, 1937, the third child and only son of Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Märtha of Norway.
His childhood was transformed by the Second World War.
When Nazi Germany invaded Norway in April 1940, Harald was just three years old.
His mother fled with Harald and his older sisters, Ragnhild and Astrid, first to Sweden and later to the United States.
They spent much of the war in Washington, while Harald’s father and grandfather, King Haakon VII, eventually joined Norway’s government-in-exile in London.
Those years forged particularly strong wartime links between Norway and Britain.
Members of the Norwegian royal family stayed in Britain during the conflict, while the resistance of King Haakon VII became an enduring symbol of Norwegian defiance against the occupation.
Harald returned to Norway with his family in June 1945 after the defeat of Nazi Germany.
He was seven years old.
His Mother Died When Harald Was Just 17
Less than a decade after the royal family returned home, Harald suffered a devastating personal loss.
Crown Princess Märtha died of cancer in 1954, when her son was only 17.
Harald later honored her memory by naming his first daughter Märtha Louise.
Another major change followed in 1957 when King Haakon VII died after a reign of more than five decades.
Harald’s father became King Olav V, while the 20-year-old prince became heir to the throne.
It would be another 34 years before Harald himself became king.
Education, Military Service and an Olympic Career
Before assuming full-time royal duties, Harald received both military and university education.
He attended the Norwegian Military Academy, graduating in 1959, and later studied at Balliol College, Oxford, from 1960 to 1962.
His studies included economics, politics and history.
Harald was also a serious athlete.
While he developed an interest in rowing during his time at Oxford, sailing became his great sporting passion.
He represented Norway at three Olympic Games — Tokyo in 1964, Mexico City in 1968 and Munich in 1972.
At the 1964 Games, he also carried Norway’s flag during the opening ceremony.
His enthusiasm for sailing continued throughout much of his life and became one of the interests most closely associated with him outside his official duties.
The Love Story That Challenged Royal Tradition
One of the most consequential decisions Harald made before becoming king involved the woman who would eventually become Queen Sonja.
Harald met Sonja Haraldsen, the daughter of a clothing merchant, in 1959.
At the time, the idea of Norway’s future king marrying a commoner was considered deeply controversial within royal circles.
Their relationship remained largely private for years.
Harald eventually made his position unmistakably clear: if he could not marry Sonja, he would not marry anyone.
Because he was the only male heir, that decision carried potentially serious consequences for the future of the monarchy.
King Olav ultimately gave his approval.
Harald and Sonja married at Oslo Cathedral on August 29, 1968, after a relationship that had lasted nearly a decade.
Their marriage came to symbolize a gradual modernization of the Norwegian monarchy.
The couple later welcomed two children: Princess Märtha Louise in 1971 and Crown Prince Haakon in 1973.
Harald Became King in 1991
King Olav V died on January 17, 1991, and Harald immediately succeeded his father.
He was 53.
Harald adopted the royal motto used by his father and grandfather, “Alt for Norge,” commonly translated as “Everything for Norway” or “We give our all for Norway.”
He formally swore his oath to uphold Norway’s Constitution before the Storting on January 21, 1991.
Later that year, Harald and Sonja were consecrated at Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim.
Norway is a constitutional monarchy, meaning the king’s responsibilities are largely representative and ceremonial.
Harald nevertheless became a highly visible national figure.
His reign stretched across changing governments, major social reforms and the country’s growing prosperity, while he increasingly used public speeches to emphasize tolerance, inclusion and national unity.
A Monarch Who Helped Modernize the Crown
Harald inherited a monarchy rooted in tradition but ruled during a period when European royal families faced mounting pressure to modernize.
Over the course of his reign, he adopted a warmer and often more informal public style.
One of his most widely remembered speeches came in 2016 when he spoke about the diversity of modern Norway, including immigrants, people of different faiths and same-sex couples.
The remarks reinforced an image of Harald as a monarch willing to define Norwegian identity broadly rather than through ancestry alone.
Reuters described him following his death as a reform-minded head of state whose empathy and inclusive outlook became central to his popularity.
His Close Relationship With the British Royals
Harald’s connection to Britain went far beyond distant ancestry.
He was related to Queen Elizabeth II and maintained strong ties with her family over decades.
He attended important British royal occasions and was among the European royals present at the 2011 wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.
He also attended Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012.
Years earlier, Harald joined the future King Charles for a shooting weekend at Sandringham and attended Charles’s 50th birthday celebrations at Highgrove in 1998.
The late Queen Elizabeth had an especially strong relationship with Norway.
She made three state visits to the country — in 1955, 1981 and 2001 — reflecting political as well as family ties strengthened by the Second World War.
In his tribute, Charles specifically recalled those connections, noting that Britain had been among the first nations to recognize Norway’s independence in 1905 and that the wartime experience had bound the countries even more closely.
Harald Refused to Abdicate Despite His Health Problems
The later years of Harald’s reign were increasingly affected by health concerns.
He underwent several periods of hospitalization and occasionally stepped away from official duties while Crown Prince Haakon acted as regent.
In 2024, Harald became seriously ill during a private trip to Malaysia and was eventually flown home to Norway.
A permanent pacemaker was subsequently implanted.
Despite his declining health, Harald repeatedly ruled out following the example of some other European monarchs who had abdicated in old age.
For Harald, becoming king had involved an oath for life.
“I swore an oath to the Storting and it is for life,” he previously said when questioned about the possibility of stepping down.
That position did not change.
He remained king until his death.
His Final Hospitalization
Harald was admitted to Oslo University Hospital on August 17 while being treated for haemolytic anaemia.
The palace later said treatment with cortisone had caused fluid retention requiring hospital care.
His condition worsened over the following weekend when he developed a bacterial infection in his bloodstream.
He was treated with antibiotics and initially responded to treatment.
However, concern intensified this week.
On August 27, the Royal Court announced that the king’s condition had become “very serious.”
Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon and other members of the family visited Rikshospitalet as Norway waited anxiously for further news.
Harald died peacefully the following morning.
A New King for Norway
Harald’s death means Norway has entered a new reign for the first time in 35 years.
His son Haakon, 53, became king immediately upon his father’s death under Norway’s constitutional system.
He is expected to reign as King Haakon VIII, continuing a royal name with deep roots in Norwegian history.
Unlike Britain, Norway does not stage a traditional coronation.
The royal transition instead centers on constitutional ceremonies, including an extraordinary Council of State and appearances before parliament.
A religious consecration may later take place at Nidaros Cathedral, as it did for Harald and Sonja in 1991.
Princess Ingrid Alexandra, Haakon’s daughter, is now first in line to the throne.
King Harald’s Final Resting Place
Norway will now enter a period of national mourning.
According to plans surrounding the royal transition, Harald is expected to be buried in the royal mausoleum at Akershus Fortress in Oslo, where members of previous generations of Norway’s royal family are also laid to rest.
His death closes a chapter that began when he inherited the throne from his father in January 1991.
Over 35 years, Harald became more than Norway’s ceremonial head of state.
To generations of Norwegians, he was a constant presence through national celebrations and moments of extraordinary grief.
That was reflected in the crowds gathering outside the palace after his death and in the tributes arriving from fellow monarchs and leaders around Europe.
King Charles perhaps captured that legacy most personally.
Norway, he said, had lost a “towering figure.”
His own family had lost something else as well — a friend, a relative and a king remembered for “kindness, compassion and deep sense of duty.”
