Thomas Markle Breaks His Silence on Archie and Lilibet’s UK Move With Heartbreaking Message
Thomas Markle has shared an emotional message about his grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle prepare to move their family back to the UK.
The 81-year-old, who has remained estranged from his daughter Meghan since 2018, revealed that he learned about the Sussexes’ plans at the “same time as the rest of the world.”
For Thomas, the news appears to have reopened a painful wound.
Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, he said he was “hurt and upset”, particularly after making what he described as numerous attempts to reconcile with Meghan.
But his greatest sadness centred on the two grandchildren he has never met.
“I Have Never Met My Grandchildren”
Thomas spoke openly about the fact that Archie and Lilibet are now preparing to leave America — before he has ever had the chance to meet them.
“I have never met my grandchildren, and now they are leaving America,” he said.
He went on to imagine a moment in the future when the children might ask about the grandfather they never knew.
“One day those kids will ask about their ‘other’ grandfather – the one who isn’t King,” Thomas said, adding that he believes Meghan and Harry are “apparently ashamed” of him.
But beneath the anger was a much more personal message.
Thomas ended by expressing the one thing he hopes Archie and Lilibet will understand someday:
“I hope they know how much I wanted to meet them.”
Those words underline the depth of the estrangement. Despite being the father of their mother, Thomas has never met either child.
The Sussexes Are Heading Back to Britain

Harry and Meghan are expected to return to the UK within days, with Archie and Lilibet already enrolled in British schools.
The move marks a remarkable change for the family after years of life in California.
Harry and Meghan previously lived in Britain before stepping down from royal duties in early 2020 and relocating to the United States. Their son Archie was born in London, while their daughter Lilibet was born after the family had settled in California.
Despite the move, there is reportedly no change to Harry and Meghan’s status. They will remain private individuals and non-working members of the Royal Family.
For Thomas Markle, however, the significance of the move is far more personal.
His grandchildren are moving closer to the country where their mother was once a working member of the Royal Family — yet the grandfather who says he has longed to meet them remains on the outside.
And his final message may be the most poignant part of all: whatever has happened between him and Meghan, he wants Archie and Lilibet to know that he wanted to be part of their lives.
