Stacey Dooley Reveals Her Most Embarrassing Strictly Come Dancing Moment: “My Skirt Fell Down” During A Live Tour Performance
Stacey Dooley has opened up about one of the most embarrassing moments of her career, revealing how a wardrobe malfunction during the Strictly Come Dancing live tour left her standing in front of thousands of people in borrowed stage underwear.
The presenter, who won the BBC dance competition with professional partner Kevin Clifton in 2018, recalled the incident during an interview with The Guardian’s Saturday Magazine. What was supposed to be another exciting performance quickly became a moment she would never forget.
“When I was doing the Strictly Live tour at the O2, my skirt fell down,” Stacey explained.
She continued: “So I am stood in the middle of the O2 in my knickers and they weren’t even my knickers, they were big borrowed stage briefs.”
It was an experience that combined the unpredictability of live entertainment with the particular embarrassment of a costume mishap happening in front of a huge audience.
Another Wardrobe Mishap During The Strictly Final
The live tour incident was not the only time Stacey experienced an unexpected wardrobe mishap during her time on Strictly Come Dancing.
During the 2018 final, she performed a Paso Doble routine with Kevin, which involved dramatic skirt movements as part of the choreography. At one point, she unintentionally revealed her beige underwear while moving the skirt.
Stacey later acknowledged the moment with her characteristic humour, writing on X: “I’ve won Strictly and flashed my knickers. A perfect Sat night.”
Despite the mishap, she went on to win the Glitterball Trophy with Kevin, securing her place in the show’s history.
Their partnership also became significant beyond the dance floor. Stacey and Kevin began their relationship in 2019 and have remained together since. In 2023, they welcomed their daughter, Minnie.
Stacey’s Candid Confessions About Kevin Clifton
Away from the dance floor, Stacey has continued to speak openly about her relationship with Kevin and their life together.
In the same interview, she described her first kiss with Kevin as the best of her life, offering a glimpse into the affection behind their long-running relationship.
However, Stacey has also joked about how decisions are made in their household.
Appearing on The Romesh Ranganathan Show, she admitted that she did not particularly want Kevin offering opinions on household matters.
“I don’t want Kev to offer any opinions whatsoever, which is really healthy isn’t it?” she said.
Romesh responded by telling her: “Listen, you’re running a dictatorship.”
Stacey agreed with the assessment, joking that she had “all the power”.
The exchange offered a humorous look at their domestic dynamic, contrasting with the more vulnerable and emotional moments she has shared about their relationship.
A Home She Never Expected To Afford
Stacey has also spoken about her home in Liverpool, describing how surprised she was to discover that a property she initially thought would be beyond her budget was actually affordable.
“I live in Liverpool and I’ve basically got this beautiful old house and I really feel the business in it,” she explained.
She went on to describe the feeling of viewing a house and assuming there was no possibility of affording it, only to realise it could be within reach because of the more affordable property market in the North of England.
Her comments offered another glimpse into her life away from television, where family, home and everyday decisions sit alongside the public attention that comes with her career.
A Memorable Moment From Her Strictly Journey
From lifting the Glitterball Trophy to surviving an unexpected costume malfunction in front of a packed arena, Stacey’s experiences on Strictly Come Dancing have provided her with plenty of stories to look back on.
Her recollection of standing on stage in borrowed briefs might be mortifying in hindsight, but her ability to laugh about the incident has helped turn it into a memorable anecdote from her time on the show.
And with her relationship with Kevin continuing and their daughter Minnie growing up, Stacey’s life has moved well beyond the dance floor — even if some of her most unforgettable memories still come from those glittering Strictly performances.
