“I Tried To Stop Him” — Witnesses Reveal Terrifying Final Moments Before Man Is Mauled To Death By Tiger At Yorkshire Wildlife Park
A tragic incident at Yorkshire Wildlife Park has left visitors and staff deeply shaken after a man died following a fatal encounter with a tiger. Witnesses have since described the desperate attempts to stop him from entering the animal’s enclosure, as well as the terrifying moments that followed.
The man, whose identity had not been released in the report, reportedly climbed over barriers and jumped into the tiger enclosure shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 10.
According to eyewitnesses, a woman tried to pull him back before he entered the enclosure, but she was unable to hold him. One visitor later recalled hearing her say, “I tried to stop him.”
A Desperate Attempt To Prevent The Tragedy
Visitors described seeing the man near the enclosure shortly before the incident. Some said he had been walking around with his headphones in, while another witness claimed he appeared to be dancing and asked a stranger to take a photograph with the tiger in the background.
The man is believed to have climbed over a barrier near the viewing platform before dropping approximately 12 feet into the enclosure, known as the Land of Tigers.
One witness said the tiger, named Altai, initially circled the man before the situation escalated. The animal then attacked him, with the incident unfolding within minutes.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, while the park’s animal keepers acted to protect the man and drive the tiger away. Rangers reportedly fired acoustic devices into the air to frighten the animal into retreating towards a shelter.
Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Keepers Praised For Their Response
The incident has also had a profound effect on the park’s staff. A source described the event as horrific and said the keepers had done everything they could to respond.
Animal ranger Charlotte Pywell stressed that the incident was not the tiger’s fault, describing the distress experienced by the keepers following the tragedy.
The park subsequently announced that it would remain closed while staff members received specialist support. It also expressed its sympathies to the man’s family and loved ones.
What Will Happen To Altai?
Following the tragedy, concerns emerged about the tiger’s future. However, Yorkshire Wildlife Park confirmed that Altai would not be euthanised as a result of the incident.
The park reassured the public that the animal was safe and well, while emphasising that its thoughts remained with the bereaved family and those affected by the events.
The enclosure is part of a two-acre reserve protected by a five-metre-high fence, with an additional barrier around the viewing platform.
The circumstances surrounding the man’s actions remain unclear. While witnesses have shared their accounts of what they saw, the reasons he entered the enclosure have not been established.
For those who witnessed the incident, the memory of a woman trying to pull him back — and the keepers rushing to intervene — will remain a particularly distressing part of an already devastating day.
