Yorkshire Wildlife Park Confirms Tiger’s Fate After Fatal Attack As Closure Is Extended And Police Continue Their Investigation

Yorkshire Wildlife Park has confirmed what will happen to Altai the tiger after a man died following an attack inside the animal’s enclosure, as the attraction remains closed while investigations continue.
The incident occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, when emergency services received reports that a man had entered the tiger enclosure at the park near Doncaster.
South Yorkshire Police confirmed that the tiger attacked the man, causing fatal injuries. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers.
The tragedy prompted the evacuation of the park, leaving visitors shaken by the events they had witnessed.
The Park Confirms Altai’s Fate
Amid growing concern about the animal’s future, Yorkshire Wildlife Park confirmed on Sunday that Altai was safe and well and would not be put down following the incident.
The announcement came as the park expressed its condolences to the man’s family and acknowledged the impact the tragedy had on its staff.
Police also confirmed that the tiger remained inside the enclosure and was uninjured. They said there was no wider risk to the public.
Witnesses Describe The Moments Before The Attack
Accounts from visitors have added further details to the unfolding story.
One person who said they saw the man shortly before the incident recalled him standing on a bridge near the enclosure, wearing EarPods and dancing while looking at the tiger.
The witness speculated that the man may simply have wanted to interact with the animal, although his reasons for entering the enclosure have not been established.
Other witnesses described scenes of panic as visitors were moved away from the area. Footage of the incident subsequently circulated on social media, prompting police to urge the public not to share distressing videos.
Emergency responders, including ambulance crews, a critical care team, a doctor and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, attended the scene.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park Extends Its Closure
The park initially announced that it would remain closed on Sunday while staff received specialist support. However, the closure was later extended to Monday, October 12, as enquiries continued.
In a message to ticketholders, the attraction confirmed that visitors booked for Monday would be contacted within five working days with information about rescheduling their visits.
The park apologised for the late notice and any inconvenience caused.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park opened in 2009, with its Land of the Tigers exhibit launching in 2011. The enclosure houses Amur tigers, an endangered subspecies whose wild population is estimated at around 500.
The attraction’s elevated viewing walkways allow visitors to observe the animals from behind barriers and fencing.
Police Continue Their Enquiries
South Yorkshire Police have confirmed that their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident is ongoing.
Authorities have not established publicly why the man entered the enclosure, and witnesses’ accounts remain accounts of what they observed rather than a confirmed explanation of his actions.
As the park remains closed, the focus is on understanding what happened, supporting those affected and allowing investigators to continue their work.
The park’s confirmation that Altai will not be euthanised has answered one major question following the tragedy. However, the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter remain under investigation.
