Savannah Guthrie Makes Surprise NBC Appearance During Extended Absence From Today

Savannah Guthrie has returned to television — but not behind her familiar desk at Studio 1A.

The 54-year-old Today co-anchor made an unexpected appearance on NBC’s Password on Tuesday night, giving viewers a chance to see her on screen while she remains away from the morning show on vacation.

Her guest spot comes after roughly two weeks away from Today, during which Kristen Welker has stepped in to help fill the gap. Guthrie has also been navigating an extraordinarily difficult year as the investigation into the disappearance of her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, continues.

Today teases Savannah’s surprise return to television

On Tuesday morning, September 1, the Today team gave viewers a preview of Guthrie’s appearance on Password, hosted by Keke Palmer and featuring Jimmy Fallon as the show’s resident celebrity player.

Pop Start fill-in host Kaylee Hartung acknowledged that viewers might be missing Guthrie during her vacation before revealing that they could catch her on the NBC game show that night.

The preview showed Guthrie enthusiastically taking part in the word-guessing competition and successfully identifying “hawk” as one of the passwords.

The episode aired at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.

Although the timing made the appearance notable, it wasn’t evidence that Guthrie had cut her Today vacation short. The Password episode was recorded earlier, before her current break from the morning program.

Her Today absence has stretched into a second week

Guthrie has been away from her regular position alongside Craig Melvin for approximately two weeks.

During her absence, Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker has been among the NBC personalities stepping into her place.

The network has characterized Guthrie’s absence as vacation time rather than a permanent change to the Today lineup.

Her whereabouts first attracted attention last week when she resurfaced publicly in New York. Guthrie and her husband, Michael Feldman, attended a U.S. Open event on August 25, where the couple posed for photographs together.

The outing offered viewers their first glimpse of Guthrie after she stepped away from the morning show.

Now her Password appearance puts her back on NBC screens — albeit in a considerably different setting.

Password offers a glimpse of Guthrie’s next television chapter

Guthrie’s appearance on a word-based game show also has an interesting connection to another major project already on her schedule.

She is preparing to host NBC’s television adaptation of Wordle, the hugely popular word game owned by The New York Times.

The upcoming series will feature teams of three contestants competing in word challenges for cash prizes, with Jimmy Fallon serving as an executive producer through his Electric Hot Dog production company. The show is expected to premiere in 2027.

Guthrie previously took time away from Today earlier this summer to film Wordle, meaning her recent stretches away from Studio 1A have not all been for the same reason.

Her current absence is being described as vacation.

A difficult year away from the cameras

Behind Guthrie’s professional schedule is an ongoing family crisis that has dominated much of her year.

Her mother, Nancy Guthrie, disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona, home in the early hours of February 1.

Authorities have said circumstances at the residence indicated that Nancy did not simply leave voluntarily. Her cellphone, wallet, vehicle and medication remained at the property, and investigators have treated her disappearance as an abduction.

Months later, Nancy still has not been found.

The case became even more complicated after multiple messages purporting to come from kidnappers surfaced. One demanded cryptocurrency, while another claimed Nancy had died after being taken.

Federal investigators subsequently determined that three kidnapping-related messages reported in the media were not genuine communications from the people responsible for Nancy’s disappearance, according to Reuters.

However, authorities later publicly released two of the notes and appealed for help identifying their author based on distinctive language and writing patterns. Officials did not declare those communications authentic when releasing them.

Savannah has continued pleading for answers

The uncertainty has left Guthrie and her family searching for answers more than six months after Nancy disappeared.

After authorities released the notes at the end of July, Guthrie made another emotional public appeal.

She said her family had spent every moment since Nancy vanished living with “agony and despair” and urged anyone who knew something — or recognized the language used in the communications — to come forward.

“We are begging for help. We are desperate,” Guthrie wrote.

She stressed that anyone with information could provide it anonymously and appealed directly to someone who might have noticed unusual behavior from a person close to them.

No arrest has been announced in connection with Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, and the search for answers continues.

A brief return — but not yet to Studio 1A

Against that difficult backdrop, Guthrie’s appearance on Password offered viewers something considerably lighter.

It was not an official return to her regular Today duties, and because the episode was taped earlier, it did not interrupt her current vacation.

Still, for viewers accustomed to seeing Guthrie every weekday morning, it provided an unexpected opportunity to see the veteran anchor back on NBC while she remains away from Studio 1A.

And with Wordle ahead, the Password appearance also offered a fitting preview of a different side of Guthrie’s television career — one built around games, quick thinking and wordplay rather than the morning news.
