Netflix fans cannot get enough of this “masterpiece” BBC detective drama that’s been hailed “British crime at its best”. Following the death of his wife in a hit-and-run incident, an old-school Scotland Yard veteran detective is relocated to the North East of England, driven by his determination to avenge her death, which is linked to a criminal he once pursued.
While carrying out this deeply personal mission, the detective must also attend to his day job, tackling complex crimes across the northern region. Set against the backdrop of the 1960s and 1970s in Newcastle, Northumberland and County Durham, Inspector George Gently enjoyed a remarkable 10-year run on BBC One before drawing to a close in 2017.

Now, fans of detective crime dramas can revisit every episode of this “brilliant” series, with all eight seasons available to stream on Netflix.

Leading the cast of Inspector George Gently is actor Martin Shaw, best known for his role as Ray Doyle in the ITV crime drama The Professionals, alongside his acclaimed performances in The Chief and Judge John Deed.
Gently’s trusted sidekick Detective Inspector John Bacchus is brought to life by actor Lee Ingleby, recognised for his roles as Paul Hughes in The A Word and Tony Myerscough in Netflix’s Criminal: UK.
Rounding out the cast are a number of well-known faces, including The Pass actress Lisa McGrillis, Emmerdale’s Tom Hutch and Being Human star Annabel Scholey.
