Riley Green wasted little time making his presence felt on The Voice, turning his first night as a coach into a country showdown with Kelly Clarkson — and walking away with exactly the singer he wanted.

Season 30 kicked off Monday night, September 21, with Green occupying a coach’s chair for the first time.

But when 19-year-old Alabama native Joe Henley stepped onto the stage, the newcomer already knew there was one battle he hoped to create.

Henley was a Riley Green fan, but he also wanted Clarkson to turn around so he could watch the veteran coach and the rookie compete for him.

His plan worked almost immediately.

The 19-year-old admitted that he had “never done a gig” before appearing on the show, making the performance one of the biggest stages he had ever faced.

He chose Travis Tritt’s “Anymore.”

Almost as soon as Henley began singing the opening notes, both Clarkson and Green turned their chairs.

That instantly created the coaching battle Henley had hoped for before walking onto the stage.

But Green had another move ready.

Rather than making his entire pitch from the coach’s chair, Green grabbed his guitar and joined Henley onstage.

The pair performed Green’s latest single, “My Way,” taking turns singing as Green accompanied them on guitar.

For Henley, it meant suddenly performing alongside an artist whose music he already admired — moments after earning chair turns from two coaches.

It also gave Green an opportunity to demonstrate the kind of relationship he could potentially offer the young country singer as his coach.

When the time came for Henley to make his decision, the outcome was hardly surprising.

He chose Team Riley.

Henley officially became the first artist on Green’s team during his debut season.

Clarkson may have lost the battle, but she wasn’t disappointed by Henley’s choice.

Instead, she congratulated Green and offered the first-time coach an enormous prediction about the singer he had just recruited.

“He could win you The Voice,” Clarkson told him.

For Green, it was an encouraging start to his first season.

Not only had he secured his first team member, but he had done it by beating one of the show’s experienced coaches for a young Alabama country singer.

And Green has already made it clear that Henley may be only the beginning.

Green isn’t hiding the kind of team he wants to build.

The country star said his strategy is to recruit as many country singers as possible during the Blind Auditions.

“I want to get all of them,” he admitted.

His reasoning is simple: Green believes a country performer has a strong chance of going all the way this season.

“I think there’s a great chance of a country artist winning the whole show,” he said.

That could put him directly into more battles with Clarkson and the other coaches whenever a strong country vocalist takes the stage.

But after his first recruitment battle, Green already has one promising contender.

Joe Henley arrived having never played a gig, triggered two chair turns almost immediately, sang alongside one of his musical favorites and left as the first member of Team Riley.

And if Clarkson’s early prediction proves accurate, Green’s very first pick as a Voice coach could ultimately become the contestant who takes him all the way to the finale.
