20 Contestants Eliminated by The 1% Club’s Infamous Mug Puzzle
What looked like a straightforward question about four mugs turned into one of the most frustrating challenges on The 1% Club, with 20 contestants getting the answer wrong and another 18 using their passes to avoid it.
The puzzle was rated at 30%, meaning 30 per cent of the public were supposedly expected to answer correctly. But when Lee Mack put it to the contestants, the seemingly simple challenge quickly caused confusion.
The question was:
“Whose mug belongs on the top shelf with the others?”
Four possible answers were displayed: ALF, SUE, MEG and BEN.
Above them were four mugs labelled HAT, LOG, OLD and ROW.
At first, there seemed to be several ways to interpret the puzzle. For some contestants, however, the answer remained completely out of reach.

Viewers Were Left Just As Confused
The difficulty of the question quickly became a talking point among viewers watching at home.
One viewer admitted they were out but planned to keep watching to see whether they could solve the remaining questions.
Another was far less impressed, calling it a “daft question.”
A third joked that they felt like “such a mug” for failing to solve it, particularly after successfully answering the earlier 15% question.
Others described it as the “most annoying question of the evening”, while one viewer went as far as calling it the “worst question the show has ever had.”
Another simply confessed: “I don’t get it.”
But the crucial clue wasn’t actually in the words printed on the mugs.
It was in their design.

The Answer Was Hidden In The Mug Handles
The trick was the shape of the handles.
Lee explained that the handles formed the shape of the letter C.
Once that detail was taken into account, the words on the top shelf could be transformed into:
- C + HAT = CHAT
- C + LOG = CLOG
- C + OLD = COLD
- C + ROW = CROW
The same pattern then had to be applied to the four possible names.
Only one of them worked.
The correct answer was ALF, because adding the C from the mug handle creates CALF.
The solution depended on contestants recognising that the handles themselves were part of the puzzle — something that was easy to miss while the 30-second countdown was running.
20 Contestants Got It Wrong

The consequences were significant.
Twenty players answered incorrectly, while a further 18 contestants used their passes rather than attempting the question.
When Lee revealed how many people had been eliminated, he reacted:
“Wow. We lost 20 people on that one. Well done if you got the answer.”
The result sparked even more debate among viewers, with some questioning whether the puzzle was genuinely clever or simply unnecessarily frustrating.
One fan described it as their worst performance on the show, while another said they would have answered every question correctly for the first time if it weren’t for the mug puzzle.
Another viewer was particularly frustrated after failing to spot the mug answer despite immediately understanding a later 25% question.
One person even suggested that SUE should have been the answer because they believed the mugs followed an alphabetical pattern.
However, the official solution was ALF.
Why The Mug Puzzle Caused So Much Confusion

The challenge ultimately came down to spotting one small visual detail.
The words HAT, LOG, OLD and ROW did not make sense on their own. The C-shaped handles were the missing part of the equation, transforming them into CHAT, CLOG, COLD and CROW.
Contestants then had to realise that CALF followed the same pattern, making ALF the only correct choice.
With just 30 seconds to work it out, that tiny detail proved enough to separate the contestants who spotted the pattern from the 20 who were eliminated.
And that was what made the puzzle so divisive: the solution was visible throughout, but only if players realised that the mugs themselves were giving away the clue.
