Craig Melvin suddenly disappeared from Today — and his wife may have just revealed why. After Carson Daly unexpectedly took Craig’s anchor seat, NBC offered little explanation beyond saying he had the “morning off.” Then Lindsay Czarniak shared a carefully timed family update involving their daughter Sybil — and one detail may explain exactly where Craig has been. Neither Craig nor NBC has confirmed the full reason yet.

Craig Melvin Missing From Today as Carson Daly Takes His Seat — Wife Lindsay Czarniak’s Family Post Offers a Clue

Craig Melvin was noticeably missing from his usual place behind the Today desk this week, prompting a significant shake-up in Studio 1A as Carson Daly stepped into the main anchor chair alongside Kristen Welker.

NBC offered only a brief explanation for the switch, saying Melvin and Savannah Guthrie had the morning off. But a series of family posts shared by Melvin and his wife, Lindsay Czarniak, may offer some context for why the veteran anchor stepped away.

The timing comes at the end of a particularly memorable summer for the Melvin family, culminating in a milestone for their 9-year-old daughter, Sybil.

Viewers tuning into the Tuesday, August 25 broadcast found an unusual pairing at the anchor desk.

With both Melvin and Guthrie absent, Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker returned for a second consecutive day to cover Guthrie’s position, while Daly moved into Melvin’s chair.

The assignment represented a change from Daly’s usual duties. Although he has long been a major presence on Today, he is typically associated with features and entertainment coverage, including his regular Pop Start segment, rather than serving as the principal news anchor.

Daly told viewers that Melvin and Guthrie had the morning off, but no additional explanation was provided during the broadcast.

How long Melvin will remain away from the show has not been announced.

Lindsay Czarniak’s post points to family time

A family of four, including a man, woman, and two children, stands on a brick path, smiling at the camera. The woman holds a bouquet of flowers and one child carries a blue gift bag.

While NBC did not provide a specific reason for Melvin’s absence, his wife’s latest social media update offered a glimpse at what had been happening away from Studio 1A.

Czarniak shared photographs of the family celebrating Sybil’s performance in The Little Mermaid through Broadway Bootcamp, a summer theater program.

The pictures showed Czarniak and Melvin alongside Sybil and their 12-year-old son, Delano.

“One of our summer highlights!” Czarniak wrote while congratulating the campers on their performance.

The family moment was clearly an important one for Melvin as well.

During Monday’s third hour of Today, the anchor spoke proudly about Sybil’s performances, which took place Friday night and Saturday afternoon.

“She was great,” Melvin said. “She was in her element, in all her glory there.”

When Dylan Dreyer asked whether Delano had also attended his sister’s performance, Melvin jokingly admitted that his son had gone “begrudgingly.”

The theater performance wasn’t the only family moment Melvin shared shortly before disappearing from the anchor desk.

On Monday, he posted a collection of photographs documenting the Melvin family’s summer, including beach trips, golf outings, concerts and gatherings with relatives and friends.

One photograph showed Melvin, Czarniak, Delano and Sybil walking together on the beach. Others included Melvin golfing with his children, attending a Jay-Z concert with Delano and spending time with his extended family.

“That’s a wrap on an incredible summer,” Melvin wrote. “Hope you made some good memories. The Melvin family is ready for a new school year!”

The timing of those posts has led to the suggestion that his brief absence could be connected to family time as the children prepare to return to school. However, neither Melvin nor NBC has explicitly confirmed that as the reason.

Several familiar faces were missing from Today

Melvin and Guthrie weren’t the only regular personalities absent from Tuesday’s broadcast.

Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones were also away, while Al Roker reported remotely from Universal Studios Orlando rather than appearing inside Studio 1A.

Guthrie’s current break follows another extended period away from the morning program earlier this summer while she worked on NBC’s upcoming Wordle game show.

Welker had already stepped into Guthrie’s seat Monday, appearing alongside Melvin before Daly replaced him the following morning.

Carson Daly’s move was an unusual one

TODAY - Season 73

Daly replacing Melvin attracted additional attention because viewers rarely see him occupying one of Today‘s principal anchor positions.

He has been part of the program for years and regularly joins his colleagues around the desk, but his established role generally centers on entertainment, pop culture and special features.

On Tuesday, however, he took on Melvin’s responsibilities alongside Welker.

The arrangement appeared temporary, with no indication from NBC that Daly was permanently replacing Melvin.

Melvin recently took another family break

Today': Craig Melvin Is Unexpectedly Absent From Show

The latest absence comes only weeks after Melvin took a previously planned summer vacation with Czarniak and their children.

During that break, Czarniak shared photographs showing the family enjoying time together at the beach.

That vacation followed a disturbing incident at NBC’s New York studios in July involving a man identified as Andrew Truelove.

According to reports, Truelove breached security at the Today studio and confronted Melvin in a restricted area. NBC subsequently said it was cooperating with law enforcement and reviewing its security procedures.

Melvin later returned to the program and assured viewers that he was doing well.

The incident also prompted additional attention to security procedures surrounding Studio 1A.

Family appears to be the focus as summer ends

For now, there is no indication that Melvin’s latest absence represents anything more than time away from the show.

The clearest public clues came from Melvin and Czarniak themselves: photographs celebrating their daughter’s performance, reflections on a summer spent together and Melvin’s declaration that his family was preparing for a new school year.

Meanwhile, Daly’s unexpected move into the anchor chair gave Today viewers a lineup they rarely see.

Whether Melvin’s absence extends beyond the brief break remains unclear, but his family’s latest posts suggest that outside Studio 1A, the anchor has had plenty to celebrate as summer draws to a close.
