Former President George W. Bush has joined the growing chorus of tributes to Dolly Parton, remembering the country music icon not only for her extraordinary career, but for the impact she had far beyond the stage.

In a statement released following Parton’s death at 80, Bush said he and his wife, Laura, were mourning alongside thousands of her fans.

“We loved her music and her style,” Bush said, before offering a description that went beyond her celebrity status: “She was a great entertainer and even greater person.”

That distinction is at the heart of Parton’s remarkable legacy.

While Parton built one of the most recognizable careers in country music, Bush specifically pointed to her efforts outside entertainment.

He praised her work to promote literacy, advance health and strengthen communities — three areas that became increasingly important parts of her public legacy.

Among her most recognizable philanthropic efforts was the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a program that provides free books to young children. What began as a local initiative in Tennessee grew into an international literacy program reaching children in multiple countries.

Parton also used her influence and resources to support health initiatives and communities, often doing so without making philanthropy the center of her public image.

That may be why Bush’s tribute feels particularly significant.

A President Remembering the Person Behind the Superstar

Bush and Parton had crossed paths during her extraordinary career, including at the 2006 Kennedy Center Honors, when Parton was among the year’s honorees.

The occasion recognized Parton’s contribution to American culture, but her legacy ultimately became much larger than awards and performances.

Bush described her as a “talented and hardworking American”, a phrase that reflects one of the most consistent themes of Parton’s career.

She never tried to separate herself from the values and experiences that shaped her.

From her childhood in rural Tennessee to becoming one of the world’s most famous entertainers, Parton maintained an image of someone who understood hard work, ambition and the importance of giving back.

Her Legacy Was Never Only About the Songs

Parton’s catalog produced some of the most enduring songs in popular music, including “Jolene,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You.”

But decades after those songs first became hits, her cultural influence had expanded far beyond music.

She became a businesswoman, actress, author and philanthropist — while continuing to use her enormous platform to support causes involving children, education and communities.

That is why Bush’s final words about her are perhaps the most telling.

“Dolly was a talented and hardworking American who will be missed.”

For millions of fans, the loss is undoubtedly personal.

Happy Birthday to the legendary @DollyParton! President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush welcomed Dolly Parton, and others, to the White House for a Kennedy Center honorees reception in 2006.

But the statement also captures something bigger: Dolly Parton didn’t simply leave behind a collection of hit records. She left behind books placed in children’s hands, communities strengthened by her generosity and generations of people who were inspired by her determination to succeed without forgetting where she came from.

The music will continue to play. But it may ultimately be the person behind the music whom America remembers most.
