Netflix’s Intense Nordic Crime Drama Blood Sacrifice Has Viewers Binge-Watching All Five Parts

Call the Midwife and Death in Paradise actors star in first look at new BBC crime thriller

Netflix’s latest Nordic crime drama is proving difficult for viewers to put down. Blood Sacrifice, a new five-part Swedish thriller, follows a Stockholm detective whose investigation takes a deeply personal turn when he is forced to work with his estranged father, a retired police officer.

The series centers on a string of brutal murders targeting police officers and has already attracted strong reactions from viewers, with some saying they watched all five episodes in a single sitting.

Created by George Kay, the writer and creative force behind acclaimed thrillers Lupin and HijackBlood Sacrifice has also earned an 86 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Here’s everything to know before starting the series.

What is Blood Sacrifice about?

The drama follows Stockholm detective Thomas Berg, whose investigation begins after two police officers are found brutally murdered.

The officers had been dispatched to a summer house in the Stockholm archipelago following a 911 call reporting a home invasion. When they arrive, however, there appears to be nobody there.

The next day, the officers’ bodies are discovered.

Their deaths soon become the first in what appears to be a terrifying series of killings, with police officers seemingly being singled out by the murderer.

As the investigation develops, Thomas realizes that he needs help from someone with experience he can trust. That person is his estranged father, Alfred, a retired detective.

Forced to put years of resentment aside, Thomas and Alfred must work together to identify the killer and stop the murders before more officers become victims.

The official synopsis describes the story as beginning during summertime in Stockholm, when daylight lingers and darkness barely seems to arrive. Against that backdrop, a seemingly straightforward emergency call leads to a brutal crime and an investigation that grows increasingly disturbing.

Thomas and Alfred’s complicated relationship

At the heart of Blood Sacrifice is the uneasy reunion between Thomas and Alfred.

Jakob Oftebro plays Thomas, a detective who has devoted his life to the police. Peter Andersson portrays Alfred, his retired detective father.

For Thomas, the case is therefore about more than tracking down a dangerous killer. As the attacks begin to affect the world he has dedicated himself to, he is also forced to confront a difficult relationship that has remained unresolved for years.

Oftebro described the series as an “intense, emotional journey” and explained that Thomas has to face both the murderer and the complicated history between himself and his father.

The actor said playing Thomas was challenging but rewarding, highlighting themes of justice, loyalty and the way unresolved parts of the past can continue to shape the present.

Jakob Oftebro stands next to an older man with a white beard, both looking ahead. A police car is behind them.

What are viewers saying about Blood Sacrifice?

Audiences have been quick to share their reactions to the Swedish thriller online, and the response so far has been enthusiastic.

One viewer described it as an “excellent” one-night binge and said it was definitely worth watching. Another called the drama “incredible.”

A third viewer praised European limited crime thrillers in general, saying they had binge-watched all five parts of the Swedish series and thought it was “SO good.”

Another viewer recommended the show after watching its first episode, describing it as a gripping Swedish thriller with an appealing lead detective.

The reactions suggest that the five-episode format has made the series particularly easy to consume in a single sitting.

Who stars in Blood Sacrifice?

Jakob Oftebro leads the cast as Thomas Berg. The actor is known for roles including Agent Hamilton.

Peter Andersson stars opposite him as Alfred, Thomas’ estranged father. Andersson is known for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

The supporting cast includes Electra Hallman, Alexander Abdallah, Henrik Norlén, Lisette T. Pagler, Magnus Krepper, Irina Björklund, Anders Mossling and Anna Maria Käll.

With its combination of a police investigation, a series of killings and the strained relationship between a son and his father, Blood Sacrifice brings a personal dimension to its Nordic crime story.
