What begins as a quiet small-town investigation soon opens the door to something far more disturbing. ‘Haunting’ series based on book with disturbing ending perfect for ‘True Detective’ fansThat pretty little hometown mystery everyone whispers about feels like a standard crime drama at first, but it drags you into a family wound that will haunt you

Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl has a cult online following, but another of her works formed the basis of a haunting, disturbing series that builds into one of the most sickening post-credit sequences of all time. Sharp Objects, starring Amy Adams (Enchanted) and Eliza Scanlen (Little Women) is a twisting, murky crime drama centred around Camille’s (Adams) hazy and traumatising childhood that fans of True Detective will love.

With an impressive 92% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, this is one for fans and experts alike. In her youth, Camille was famously beautiful, a cheerleader and loved her younger sister, who tragically died. When she returns home, her overbearing, Southern Belle mother, wafts around the house day drinking as Camille, always head to toe in black, combs through her home town for clues about the murders of two young girls.

Her only life support is her father-like editor, who checks in on her as she tries to keep her head above water in a town rife with gossip and lies.

She meets her young half-sister, Amma, who lives a double life for her helicopter mother, and slowly Camille reveals the truth about her family.

One Reddit user said: “I think the term “haunting” is overused nowadays to describe sad prestige TV. But that show is haunting. I always say it made me feel like I needed a shower afterwards.”

Another wrote: “The soundtrack and the cinematography, along with the acting, made it one of the best shows for me. This show was incredibly atmospheric and I wish we had more, the closest I can think of is True Detective.

“In both cases, we have a slow burn with the “who did it?” intrigue that is still relevant (Sharp Objects made it look like everyone in town was guilty which was incredible) but you’re so engrossed by the mood that it became secondary.”

One fan called the series a “masterpiece” writing on IMDB: “Absolutely brilliant. If you’re looking for a happy story, look somewhere else. Very dark, very depressing, if you have it in you to watch, you get a masterfully spun story of true pain, true guilt and loss.

“Also a very good depiction of mental health. With a final act that is JAW dropping. I’ve never written a review on here, but this is a masterpiece. “

The 2019 8-time Emmy nominated limited series also stars Chris Messina, Patricia Clarkson and Henry Czerny. The series is available to stream on NOW TV, or HBO.
