The family scenes that follow are decidedly low-key. Lilibet rides her bicycle while Archie runs alongside her, with deer moving through the landscape ahead of them. One of the family’s dogs races along a wooded path, while Harry, Archie and Lilibet are later shown together in a fishing boat.

The return to the U.K. was announced in August
The family’s return first emerged publicly on August 19, when reports revealed that Harry and Meghan planned to relocate from the United States to Britain later that month.
Archie and Lilibet were also expected to attend school in the U.K. beginning in September. The couple planned to establish themselves at a private, non-royal residence rather than return to a royal property.
The move does not represent a return to working royal life. Harry and Meghan stepped away from their roles as senior working members of the Royal Family in 2020, and there are no plans for them to resume those duties.
The family subsequently arrived in Britain on August 26, reportedly flying privately from California and landing at Birmingham Airport shortly before midday. They are believed to be based at a private property outside London, with the Cotswolds area reported as their likely home base.
The arrangement also appears to leave the door open for a future return to California. Harry and Meghan have kept their Montecito residence and their vacation property in Portugal, indicating that their U.K. stay may not necessarily be permanent.
A major change for Archie and Lilibet
For Archie and Lilibet, the move marks a significant change in their daily lives.
The children have spent the majority of their lives in the United States, where the Sussex family has been based since leaving Britain. Their enrollment at British schools means they are now beginning a new chapter in the country that is central to their father’s family history.
The family’s first public glimpse of that adjustment came through Meghan’s September 13 video, where the children appear at ease outdoors, riding bikes, exploring wooded paths and fishing with their father.
The footage also gave viewers a brief chance to hear Archie speaking on camera. His British-sounding accent quickly attracted attention after the video was posted.
King Charles was reportedly caught off guard
The move has also created a new dynamic within the Royal Family.
Harry and Meghan, along with their children, had visited King Charles at his country home, Highgrove, in July. However, the planned return to Britain was not discussed during that meeting. According to reports at the time, Charles learned about the relocation plans on August 16, just three days before the news became public.
The King’s July meeting with Harry and his family was significant after years of strained relations. Their return now means Charles has the possibility of seeing his son and grandchildren more regularly, even though Harry and Meghan remain outside the working Royal Family.
Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty Magazine, described greater access to the Sussexes, particularly the grandchildren, as positive for Charles on a personal level. At the same time, he cautioned that rebuilding trust would take considerably longer.
As Little told The Guardian, the rift developed over more than six years, meaning it would not be resolved within a matter of weeks. He characterized the situation as a lengthy process and said the Sussexes’ return raised “far more questions than answers.”
The comments reflect the complicated position surrounding Harry’s return. Physical proximity may make family contact easier, but it does not automatically erase the tensions that have developed over the years.
Prince William faces a different situation
Harry’s relationship with his older brother, Prince William, remains particularly sensitive.
William and Kate Middleton were reportedly informed of Harry and Meghan’s plans before the announcement, but the brothers are not thought to currently be in contact. The return therefore brings Harry physically closer to a family relationship that remains deeply strained.
Royal biographer Robert Jobson said William could face additional pressure following Harry’s decision to return.
“The prodigal son coming back will be difficult for him,” Jobson said, arguing that Harry’s presence could force William to consider a more pragmatic approach to their relationship.
He also raised the possibility of difficult family conversations, asking whether William and Harry could realistically sit down together after everything that has happened between them.
Jobson suggested that King Charles could view Harry’s return as an opportunity for reconciliation and potentially hope to bring his son closer to the family. But he also noted that if Charles had been blindsided by the decision, the King could understandably be upset.
Harry’s return brings complicated questions for the monarchy
The Sussexes’ decision to live in Britain while remaining non-working royals creates an unusual situation for the Royal Family.
Harry and Meghan are returning to the country without returning to the roles they left in 2020. They will live privately, while continuing their own professional and charitable interests rather than undertaking official royal duties.
That distinction has remained important since the move was first announced. Their return is therefore a family and personal decision rather than a restoration of their former position within the monarchy.
For King Charles, the change could make it easier to spend time with Archie and Lilibet while also bringing his relationship with Harry back into closer proximity. For William, however, Harry’s presence may reopen difficult questions surrounding their estrangement.
As Jobson put it, the situation could be complicated for the King on several levels. Greater contact with Harry could create opportunities for reconciliation while simultaneously making existing family tensions harder to avoid.
The family has already faced a school change
The Sussexes’ return has also brought an unexpected development involving their children’s education.
On September 14, it was reported that Archie and Lilibet were being moved from their new British school after only two days. A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan said the decision followed discussions with the family’s security team about the practicalities of their current arrangements.
The spokesperson stressed that the decision was not a reflection on the school or its staff. Security concerns surrounding the children’s transportation were instead cited as the reason for the change.
The development adds another layer to the family’s transition as they settle into life in Britain.
A new chapter, but not a return to royal duties
For now, Meghan’s Instagram video provides the clearest picture of what the Sussexes’ return actually looks like behind closed doors.
