Ken Jennings has spent years being known as one of the most formidable contestants in Jeopardy! history. But the longtime champion has now revealed that some of the personal stories he told during his record-breaking run were not exactly true.

Jennings, who won a record 74 consecutive games in 2004, opened up about his contestant days during an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE for a recent PEOPLE in 10 interview.

The 52-year-old admitted that he occasionally embellished — or simply invented — personal anecdotes because he struggled to come up with something interesting to say before each new episode.

“I didn’t feel like I had a great story in game number three, much less game number 73,” Jennings told PEOPLE.

“So a lot of my stories are — and I’ve confessed this before — not 100% true,” he added.

According to Jennings, the stories served a simple purpose: giving him and then-host Alex Trebek something to talk about for a few seconds before the game began.

“It’s just, you know, something that you and Alex Trebek can chat about for 25 seconds. Like, mission accomplished,” he explained.

Jennings then offered a couple of particularly memorable examples.

He once told the show that he liked airline food — despite admitting that he actually did not.

And when Trebek asked whether he had any “dark secrets,” Jennings jokingly responded, “I killed a man down south once.”

That story, too, was completely untrue.

Jennings laughed off the idea of fact-checking his contestant anecdotes, joking that Jeopardy! was not The New Yorker.

So what makes a personal anecdote good enough for Jeopardy!?

Jennings has a surprisingly simple answer.

“A good Jeopardy anecdote is a little bit like a Mad Lib,” he explained.

He offered the example of someone in their 30s who owns two orange tricycles.

“On paper, that’s kind of a boring story. Somebody has two orange tricycles,” Jennings said.

“But when you think about it on Jeopardy!, that’s kind of the perfect thing.”

The key, he suggested, is an unusual detail that is specific enough to catch the audience’s attention and give the host something to work with.

Jennings Admits He Gets Invested in Contestants

During the interview, Jennings was also asked whether he has ever had a favorite contestant while hosting the iconic quiz show.

He stressed that he cannot show favoritism, but admitted that he still becomes emotionally invested in contestants just like the viewers watching at home.

“I’m like the audience. I get invested, too,” he said.

One contestant who particularly caught his attention was Jamie Ding, who won 31 consecutive games during the spring of 2026 and earned $882,605 in winnings.

Jennings said he was genuinely rooting for Ding and even believed the contestant had a chance of challenging his own historic record.

“Jamie was the guy — the first person in a few years — that I thought, like, this guy could be my record,” Jennings said.

He also praised Ding as “such a sweetheart,” saying he was pleased that audiences seemed to connect with him as well.

Why ‘Jeopardy!’ Has Lasted for More Than 40 Years

Jennings also reflected on why Jeopardy! has managed to remain a television institution for more than four decades despite the constantly changing entertainment landscape.

For him, the answer goes beyond nostalgia.

“For young audiences, old audiences, red states, blue states, it doesn’t matter. This is a place where America comes together,” Jennings said.

He also believes the show’s emphasis on knowledge is part of its enduring appeal.

“And facts actually matter, you know?” he said. “There’s expertise and scholarship on Jeopardy!, and that’s how it should be.”

Jennings described that as a hopeful sign, suggesting that the show’s continued popularity demonstrates that audiences still value curiosity, knowledge and expertise.

After going from legendary contestant to the person standing behind the podium, Jennings now has a unique perspective on both sides of the Jeopardy! experience.

And perhaps his latest confession proves one thing: sometimes, even on a show built entirely around facts, the stories told between the clues can be a little less factual.
