Borussia Dortmund Provide Update On Konstantinos Karetsas After Scary Champions League Collapse

Borussia Dortmund have offered an update on teenage star Konstantinos Karetsas after the 18-year-old was taken to hospital following a worrying incident during their Champions League clash with Villarreal.

Karetsas was forced off just 27 minutes into Tuesday night’s match after appearing to suffer circulatory problems.

The young Greek attacker had just kicked the ball back towards a team-mate when he suddenly sat down on the pitch in discomfort.

Dortmund’s medical staff immediately rushed over to assess him before Karetsas was seen lying on the field.

German newspaper Bild reported that Karetsas had also missed training on Monday because of fatigue, adding another detail to the concern surrounding his early departure from the match.

There was no immediate indication of the cause of the circulation problems, with the teenager undergoing further medical examinations at hospital.

Karetsas’ Dortmund Start Interrupted

The incident came just weeks after Karetsas completed a £27million move to Dortmund from Belgian side Genk.

The highly rated teenager arrived as one of the club’s major summer additions and had been handed a starting role for their Champions League opener against Villarreal.

His fellow Greek Giannis Konstantelias had also joined Dortmund for a similar fee earlier in the window, only to suffer an ACL injury on his debut.

That setback forced Dortmund to look for additional attacking options, eventually bringing in Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri on loan.

Nwaneri was introduced from the bench on Tuesday after Karetsas was forced to leave the field.

Dortmund Fight Back To Win

Despite the worrying scenes involving Karetsas, Dortmund eventually secured an eventful 3-2 victory to begin their Champions League campaign with three points.

Renato Veiga’s own goal gave the Bundesliga side the lead before Villarreal levelled through Santiago Mourino.

Serhou Guirassy then became the decisive figure, scoring twice in the final ten minutes to put Dortmund in control.

An injury-time own goal gave Villarreal late hope, but Dortmund held on for the win.

The result provided a positive ending to a dramatic night, although the thoughts of the Dortmund camp will inevitably remain with Karetsas as he undergoes further medical checks.
