Alexis Mac Allister Admits He Is ‘Very Sad’ Liverpool Refused To Offer Him A New Contract

Alexis Mac Allister has opened up about his disappointment at Liverpool’s decision not to offer him a new contract — admitting he was left “very, very sad” after watching two of his midfield team-mates secure fresh deals.

The Argentina international, 27, revealed that there had been opportunities for him to leave Liverpool during the summer, but he ultimately decided that staying at Anfield was the right choice despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.

Mac Allister said he had been informed that the club was not currently in a position to offer him a new contract.

“There was a chance,” he said when asked how close he came to leaving.

“As everyone knows, I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract which of course makes me very, very sad.

“Because everyone can see I give 100 per cent for this football club every single day. In training and games. I can have good games, bad games, like everyone – but I always give my best.”

Szoboszlai And Gravenberch Deals Add To His Disappointment

Mac Allister’s frustration has been heightened by the fact that Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch have both committed their futures to Liverpool with new contracts.

While the midfielder stressed that he was genuinely pleased for his team-mates, their renewals inevitably made his own situation harder to ignore.

“I see Dominik and Ryan renew their contracts,” Mac Allister said. “That makes me very happy because they deserve it but also at the same time it makes me very sad I didn’t get mine.”

Despite that disappointment, the World Cup winner insisted Liverpool supporters should not question his commitment.

“Of course, there is still time, the fans don’t have to worry because I will give 100 per cent until my very last day I am here,” he added.

“We will see what happens. There were options to leave this summer but I think right now I am in the right club.”

Mac Allister Leaves The Door Open

Mac Allister still has two seasons remaining on his current Liverpool contract, including the current campaign, meaning there is time for the situation to change.

Asked whether the club could eventually reconsider, he offered a cautious “maybe”.

“Maybe, I don’t know,” he said. “It depends on how I perform during these years. Like every football player. And they (have a) right to make their decision as well.”

He again promised to focus on performing rather than allowing the contract situation to become a distraction.

“But as I said, the fans do not need to worry because I am going to give my 100 per cent and hopefully or maybe they will change their minds.”

Mac Allister also reflected on what he has already achieved since arriving at Anfield.

“In my three years at the club, I have done very good things, we went through difficult times and won a Premier League and Carabao Cup,” he said.

“For me it has been a very successful period of my life, I don’t think I have to prove something but of course I need to show my level.”

‘I Love This Club’

For all the uncertainty surrounding his contract, Mac Allister made one thing particularly clear: he remains deeply committed to Liverpool.

“I love this club, I love being here, I love the fans,” he said.

“As a player it sometimes happens when you are at a club for a long, long time and you don’t realise where you are. That doesn’t happen to me, I know this is an amazing club and this city is very special. I love being here.”

Those words will offer reassurance to Liverpool supporters who may have feared the contract situation could eventually push the midfielder towards the exit.

Liverpool head into Wednesday evening’s Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid with Mac Allister still firmly part of their plans.

Head coach Andoni Iraola has also made his position clear, stressing that the most important thing is that Mac Allister wants to remain at the club and revealing that he “rates him very highly”.

Meanwhile, new signing Bradley Barcola is pushing for more involvement after making a cameo appearance during Liverpool’s 2-0 victory at Ipswich last Friday.

For now, Mac Allister’s future remains unresolved — but his message to Liverpool is unmistakable: despite the hurt of being overlooked for a new deal, he still wants to be at Anfield and intends to give everything for the club for as long as he remains there.
