“We should keep going! [But] we got to show what just happened. Don’t take us off. Keep us on the air.” Bush Hager added, before explaining that “unfortunately” a crew member had tripped out of shot.
“He was walking backwards. This is the hazard of the job. And he ran into that chair,” she explained as the camera panned to an overturned stool.
“Now, the good news is, if you go back, I think our shot was pretty steady,” she noted.
Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones were forced to briefly break from their usual live-TV routine Friday after an unexpected mishap unfolded behind the cameras on the Today show.
The two hosts were introducing their “Today with Jenna & Sheinelle” segment on August 28 when a sudden noise could be heard off-camera. The camera appeared to wobble before the broadcast switched to another angle.
Jones immediately began giggling, while Bush Hager looked toward the commotion and asked, “Are you okay over there?”
A crew member reassured them that he was fine, and Jones admitted she had been trying to simply carry on with the segment.
But rather than ignoring what had just happened, the hosts decided to acknowledge the mishap with viewers.
“We should keep going! But we got to show what just happened. Don’t take us off. Keep us on the air,” Bush Hager said.
She then explained that a cameraman had been walking backward when he accidentally collided with a stool, sending it toppling over.
The camera eventually panned toward the overturned stool, giving viewers a glimpse of what had caused the sudden disruption.
Despite the accident, the cameraman had managed to keep the shot remarkably steady.
“You almost fell backwards, and yet you kept that camera [still],” Bush Hager told him.
The crew then applauded as the cameraman appeared on screen.
Jones joked about her own reaction, saying the incident made her wonder whether she was missing “a chip” because her instinct had been to keep the show moving.
Bush Hager, however, made sure to emphasize that the most important thing was that the crew member was not hurt.
“He was fine,” she explained, adding that she simply wanted to make sure he had not injured himself.
Jones then poked fun at herself: “Meanwhile, I’m like, ‘Get up! Let’s go!’ No, I’m just kidding.”
The moment ended on a lighter note, with Bush Hager using the incident to highlight just how much work goes on behind the scenes of a live morning show.
“It just shows you how hard our crew works around here every single day,” she said, while joking that the crew also has to put up with the hosts’ antics.
The harmless on-air mishap was a reminder that even a carefully choreographed live broadcast can go slightly off script — and sometimes, the people behind the cameras end up becoming part of the show themselves.
