Noel Gallagher Says His ‘Heart Is Full Of Pride’ After Son’s Manchester Derby Gesture — ‘They Got Stuck Into It Big Time’
Noel Gallagher has revealed just how much his sons embraced Manchester derby day after his 15-year-old was caught making a very clear gesture towards Manchester United supporters at Old Trafford.
The Oasis star was among the Manchester City fans watching Sunday’s controversial 1-0 victory alongside his sons Donovan, 18, and Sonny, 15. While City celebrated Erling Haaland’s winning goal, Sonny was also spotted flipping the bird towards the home support in a moment that quickly went viral.
And rather than being embarrassed, Gallagher joked that the image left him feeling particularly proud of his boys.
“There comes a point in your time as a father where you look at your children and you think, ‘My god, I brought you up well’ – when they feel it as much as you do and when they get it,” he told talkSPORT.
“Let’s not forget, when you’re in that away end and the United fans are in front of you, they’re giving it to you as much as you’re giving it to them.
“But he made the newspapers today and my heart is full of pride for my sons who got stuck into it yesterday and got stuck into the United fans as well.”
The derby itself was already surrounded by controversy after Haaland’s winner was initially ruled out for offside before a VAR intervention overturned the decision.
The goal was later judged to have been wrongly awarded because Enzo Fernandez had attempted to play the ball while in an offside position, with Pro Ref subsequently apologising to Manchester United.
‘They Were So Keen To Go’
Gallagher is a regular presence at Manchester City matches but admitted Old Trafford is not his favourite destination.
The 59-year-old said he would “ordinarily” avoid the trip because getting in and out of the stadium “can get a bit spicy”.
This time, however, his sons were determined to experience the derby at Old Trafford for themselves.
“They were so keen to go because they’d never been, so I went for them really and they got stuck into it big time and it was a great, great day,” Gallagher said.
For the Gallagher family, the afternoon ended with three City supporters celebrating a derby victory — and one very memorable moment from Sonny that ensured he left Old Trafford with a little more attention than he probably expected.
