Why Barbarians Stands Out for Its Historical Detail

Beyond the fighting, Barbarians has attracted attention for the effort put into its costumes, military equipment and portrayal of Roman and Germanic cultures.

The series holds an 86% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, while its audience score is 71%. The first season performed particularly well with critics, earning an 86% rating from seven reviews.

Historian Michael Taylor assessed the show’s depiction of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest and reportedly gave its authenticity 8 out of 10. Details such as the soldiers’ furs, helmets, armour and face coverings contribute to the sense of a world shaped by military occupation and cultural division.

Some of the Roman headgear worn by Arminius was modelled on archaeological finds from Kalkriese, Germany, a site associated with the ancient battle. These visual details help distinguish the series from historical dramas that focus more heavily on spectacle than on the material culture of the period.

Language is another notable feature. Roman characters speak Classical Latin, while the Germanic tribes speak modern German. Although the latter is not a historically exact reconstruction of the languages spoken by Germanic peoples in the first century, the contrast gives the series a distinctive sound and reinforces the divide between the two sides.

The production’s attention to atmosphere extends beyond dialogue and costumes. Its music, set decoration and cinematography create a sombre, immersive setting for the conflict. Rather than relying entirely on rapid-fire action, Barbarians allows tension to build around the characters’ divided loyalties and the consequences of their choices.

How Does Barbarians Compare With Spartacus?

'Barbarians' (2020)

Both Barbarians and Spartacus deliver violent confrontations, rebellion and struggles against Roman power, but their approaches are different.

The Starz series Spartacus is known for its heightened action, fast pace and stylised violence. Barbarians, by comparison, adopts a more restrained rhythm and a grittier visual style, placing greater emphasis on the political and personal divisions behind the conflict.

Its battle sequences still provide plenty of scale, particularly during the recreation of the Teutoburg Forest ambush. The result is a historical drama that can appeal to viewers who enjoy the intensity of Spartacus but prefer a more grounded atmosphere.

The series also shares the cinematic ambition of Roman-themed films such as Centurion and The Eagle. Its combination of large-scale combat, detailed production design and character-driven storytelling gives the story a scope that feels closer to a feature-length historical epic than a conventional television drama.

Is Barbarians Worth Watching?

For viewers interested in ancient Rome, military history and stories of resistance, Barbarians offers a compelling mix of action and historical drama. Its central conflict is rooted in the real Roman defeat at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, while its fictionalised character relationships add emotional stakes to the larger struggle.

The series should not be treated as a documentary: some characters and storylines are dramatised, and certain historical details have been adapted for television. Nevertheless, its visual ambition, performances and attention to the cultural divide between Rome and Germania make it an engaging choice for fans of the genre.

With two seasons and 12 episodes, Barbarians is also a manageable binge for anyone looking for a complete historical action drama. Both seasons are listed on Netflix, making it an appealing option for viewers seeking an alternative to Spartacus and other Roman war epics.
