Prince Harry’s UK Return Sparks Royal Tensions as Questions Grow Over Future With William

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s planned return to Britain is set to mark a major new chapter for the Sussexes — but it could also reopen old wounds within the Royal Family.
Royal insiders claim the move has caught Prince William by surprise and could create pressure for a reconciliation between the two brothers, whose relationship has remained strained since Harry and Meghan stepped away as senior royals in 2020.
The couple’s return reportedly came as a shock to King Charles, who was informed only three days before the announcement. However, their status will remain unchanged: Harry and Meghan will continue as private individuals and non-working royals, with no “half-in, half-out” arrangement.
The Sussexes are expected to settle in a non-royal home outside London, while their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, are set to attend schools in the UK. The family will also keep their properties in California and Portugal, while Meghan will continue running her lifestyle brand, As Ever, from their new base.

William and Harry’s strained relationship faces new test
The return comes after years of public disagreements between Harry and the Royal Family.
Harry has previously made serious allegations about William, Kate Middleton, King Charles and Queen Camilla in his memoir Spare, his Netflix documentary and interviews.
The brothers were last seen together publicly at the King’s coronation in 2023, while reports suggested there was little interaction when they attended the funeral of their uncle Lord Fellowes in August 2024.

Former BBC royal correspondent Peter Hunt warned that Harry’s return could create further challenges for the monarchy.
“The surprise return of Harry and Meghan is likely to have left William apoplectic,” Hunt said.
He added that the move could make reconciliation between the brothers more difficult to avoid.
Public opinion remains a challenge
The Sussexes also face the challenge of rebuilding their image in Britain.

A YouGov poll last month showed that only 22 per cent of Britons viewed Meghan positively, while 65 per cent held an unfavourable opinion. Harry received a more mixed response, with 33 per cent viewing him positively and 58 per cent negatively.
PR expert Mark Borkowski said the couple would need to approach their return carefully and rebuild trust with the British public.
“They now have to be very cautious in how they reintegrate themselves back into British society,” he told the Daily Mail.
He suggested Harry and Meghan would need to take “small cautious steps” and accept that repairing their reputation would require effort.

Experts question the couple’s strategy
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams described the move as a serious moment for the monarchy, suggesting it could create uncertainty around the Royal Family’s future.
He also questioned whether Harry’s return was linked to concerns about his position if William eventually becomes king.
Meanwhile, PR consultant Andy Barr said the Sussexes would need a major reputation recovery strategy.

He argued that their return could attract attention but warned that the public would judge them by their actions rather than their words.
“The real PR test won’t be whether they come back, but what they do when they get here,” Barr said.
Security and family considerations remain key issues

Security has long been one of Harry’s biggest concerns about returning to the UK. After stepping down as a working royal in 2020, his level of official protection changed, leading to a long legal battle with the Home Office.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham said security arrangements were a private matter between Harry and the relevant authorities.
Former royal protection officer Dai Davies advised the couple to maintain a lower public profile, warning that a high-profile lifestyle could increase security challenges.
A possible new beginning?

Despite the controversy, some figures believe the move could create an opportunity for healing.
Education Secretary Lucy Powell said she hoped Harry and Meghan’s return would become part of a wider reconciliation within the Royal Family.
Harry’s friend David Wiseman, from the Invictus Games Foundation, also welcomed the decision, saying having Harry back in Britain ahead of the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham was “excellent news.”
The Sussexes’ return will undoubtedly attract intense attention, but whether it leads to renewed family ties or deeper divisions remains uncertain. For Harry, Meghan, and the Royal Family, the next chapter will be watched closely around the world.
