Manchester United supporters made their anger impossible to ignore before Sunday’s Manchester derby, with around 500 fans taking part in a passionate protest against the Glazer family and Sir Jim Ratcliffe outside Old Trafford.

The demonstration came after the club suspended 685 season tickets as part of a crackdown on ticket touting, a move that has triggered a furious response from sections of United’s match-going support.

Fan group The 1958 accused the club of having “crossed a line”, claiming loyal season-ticket holders had been suspended without “compelling evidence”. The decision to suspend accounts before allowing supporters to appeal has only intensified the feeling among some fans that the club is pushing them out.

United has defended its approach, confirming that any reallocated season tickets would be sold at season-ticket prices rather than matchday prices and insisting that “the club is not profiting from this process”.

For many supporters, however, the explanation has done little to calm the situation.

‘We Want Our Club Back’

Protesters gathered at The Bishop Blaize pub before making their way towards Sir Matt Busby Way, chanting their opposition to the club’s ownership and leadership.

Several banners delivered blunt messages aimed directly at Ratcliffe.

“We want our club back, some things are worth fighting for,” read one.

Others carried the stark declarations: “Jim ain’t the one” and “Jim can’t fix it.”

Another banner accused the club of taking everything from supporters while imposing “premium prices” and alleged it was all “for greed”.

Police estimated that around 500 fans attended the protest, giving the demonstration a sizeable presence ahead of one of the biggest fixtures on United’s calendar.

‘The Way You Treat Us Is A Disgrace’

The protest also spilled into the atmosphere inside Old Trafford.

The Red Army announced that there would be no flag display on the Stretford End for the derby. Instead, a single banner was placed above the players’ tunnel carrying a message directed at the club’s owners, directors and decision-makers:

“THE WAY YOU TREAT US IS A DISGRACE.”

The Red Army said the banner was intended to represent more than one supporters’ group, describing it as a message from genuine fan groups, match-going supporters, supporters’ clubs and fan representatives who had been affected by the club’s recent decisions.

The group also insisted that the issue stretched beyond United, calling it a “league-wide crisis” that should be addressed across English football.

Pressure For Change

While The Red Army said it remains committed to backing the players and manager, it also renewed its call for change in the way United engages with its supporters.

The group said match-going fans should be prioritised within the club’s fan-engagement model and called for the Fans’ Forum process to be reviewed and improved.

It also argued that supporters need dedicated representation capable of engaging openly with match-going fans and fighting for their interests.

The message was ultimately about more than the 685 suspended season tickets. For a section of United’s support, the dispute has become a wider battle over who the club belongs to — and whether the voices of those who fill Old Trafford every week are still being heard.

And with the banners flying before a Manchester derby, the message to Ratcliffe and the wider United hierarchy could hardly have been clearer.
