The Former United Midfielder Made It Clear He Had A Serious Issue With What Fernandes Did In The Incident — And He Was Not Prepared To Soften His Verdict. Roy Keane Turns Manchester Derby Red Card On Its Head — “Bruno Is The One Who’s Violent Here”

Roy Keane delivered a striking verdict on Phil Foden’s Manchester derby red card, arguing that Bruno Fernandes was the player who started the incident and was fortunate to escape with only the consequences of Foden’s retaliation.

The clash erupted midway through the first half when Foden, who had been left on the ground following a tackle, became involved with the Manchester United captain.

Fernandes appeared to make contact with Foden from behind, prompting an angry reaction from the Manchester City midfielder. Foden then swung both feet into Fernandes’ stomach.

Referee Michael Oliver immediately produced a straight red card.

The decision was subsequently checked and confirmed by VAR, leaving City to play with 10 men for more than an hour.

But Keane saw the incident very differently.

Keane: “Bruno Is The One Who’s Violent Here”

Analysing the match for Sky Sports, the former Manchester United captain questioned why Fernandes escaped punishment for his initial actions.

Keane argued that Foden clearly reacted, but insisted the sequence had started with Fernandes.

“Bruno catches him, gives the foul away and gives him a little kick. Foden is sent off and I’m guessing it’s classed as violent conduct.”

Then came his bluntest assessment:

“To me, Bruno is the one who’s violent here. I have to call it out.”

Keane acknowledged that Foden’s reaction was obvious, but believed the punishment did not properly reflect what had happened immediately beforehand.

He even compared the situation to a previous incident involving Kyle Walker, saying he had previously criticised the former City defender for going down after a headbutt.

For Keane, the distinction between initiating contact and retaliating was crucial.

“I don’t think that’s a red card for Foden.”

Neville Takes A Different View

Gary Neville was far less sympathetic towards Foden during his commentary.

The former United defender initially suggested that Fernandes could have been booked, but he had little doubt that Foden’s reaction crossed the line.

“It looks like Foden reacts. It’s a kick into the stomach there, he’s not going to get away with that.”

Neville nevertheless agreed that Fernandes should have been punished.

“I thought it was a yellow for Fernandes.”

But he stopped short of agreeing with Keane that Foden should have escaped a red card.

His view was that while he would have preferred a yellow for Fernandes and no dismissal for Foden, once Foden deliberately kicked his opponent in the stomach, the situation had effectively decided itself.

One Clash, Two Very Different Verdicts

The incident quickly became one of the most debated moments of the Manchester derby.

Foden was shown the red card for his retaliation, while Fernandes avoided a similar punishment despite Keane’s belief that the United captain had initiated the confrontation.

That left two former United players offering markedly different readings of the same sequence.

Keane focused on what happened before the kick.

Neville focused on what Foden ultimately did.

And with the red card standing after VAR’s review, Foden was left watching from the sidelines as the derby continued with Manchester City down to 10 men.

Keane’s verdict, however, ensured the controversy did not end with the referee’s decision.
