Prince Harry Returns to the U.S. Weeks After UK Move, With His Children at the Heart of His Message

Prince Harry’s return to the United States came just weeks after he moved to the UK with Meghan Markle and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. But his trip back across the Atlantic had a clear purpose: speaking publicly about the risks emerging technologies could pose to children.

The Duke of Sussex arrived in New York on September 22, just one day after attending the WellChild Awards in London on his own. His appearance in New York was tied to the Clinton Global Initiative’s annual meeting, where he was scheduled to speak about artificial intelligence, health, climate and technology.

Harry speaks as a father

Hosted by Bill and Hillary Clinton, the Clinton Global Initiative brought Harry back to New York for more than a ceremonial appearance. He took the stage to discuss the rapidly changing technology landscape and its potential impact on young people.

Harry made clear that his perspective was deeply personal.

“But I come to this as a father,” he said, explaining that he had spoken with parents who were grieving the loss of children after they were harmed by technology.

His remarks also connected directly to his previous appearance at the Clinton Global Initiative in 2024. That year, Harry and Meghan Markle launched the Parents’ Network after meeting families whose children had died by suicide or suffered serious harm linked to social media.

For Harry, the experience offered a warning about what can happen when new technology develops faster than safeguards designed to protect children.

From social media to artificial intelligence

Harry pointed to hundreds of images of children displayed behind him as he spoke about the families affected by technology.

“Hundreds of faces. Hundreds of lock screens. Hundreds of children who should still be here,” he said.

He argued that the lessons learned from the rise of social media should not be forgotten as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life.

“Social media learned how to capture our attention. AI is learning how to enter our relationships,” Harry said.

He continued by arguing that AI could seek something deeper than a user’s attention.

“It doesn’t just want your attention; it wants your attachment.”

Harry said society had already spent years trying to reduce technology’s hold over children’s attention and warned against waiting another decade to understand what could happen if technology gains a similar influence over their relationships.

His concerns echoed the broader focus of his appearance at the Clinton Global Initiative, where he emphasized the need for greater responsibility as AI develops.

A call for accountability

Harry also called for greater transparency, choice, standards and accountability in the development of technology.

He stressed that young people and people with firsthand experience of technology-related harm should remain central to the conversation.

“Technology and the humans in charge of it are going to promise us the world. They must be accountable for the world they actually deliver,” he said.

His message built on the work he and Meghan began through the Parents’ Network in 2024, when they brought attention to families who said their children had experienced severe consequences connected to social media.

Harry ended his remarks by urging leaders to act before similar problems emerge with the next generation of technology.

“Two years ago, I brought these faces here as a warning. I do not want to return with more. So this time, let’s move first,” he said.

The New York appearance followed Harry’s return to London

Harry’s appearance in New York came only a day after he attended the 2026 WellChild Awards in London on September 21.

He appeared at the ceremony without Meghan and continued his longstanding involvement with WellChild, where he has served as patron for 18 years. The 2026 event was held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel and celebrated seriously ill children, young people and the families and carers who support them.

At the event, Harry presented the Inspirational Child award and spoke about the families caring for children with complex medical needs.

His London appearance was one of his early public engagements since returning to the UK with Meghan and their children.

The family moved back to Britain in August, bringing Archie and Lilibet with them. Harry’s subsequent trip to New York means his return to the United States came only weeks after that move.

For Harry, however, the reason for crossing the Atlantic was closely connected to an issue he has continued to pursue publicly: protecting children as technology evolves.

At the Clinton Global Initiative, he framed that concern through his experience as a father and through the stories of families he has met through the Parents’ Network.

His central message was straightforward: the consequences of social media should serve as a warning, and society should act before artificial intelligence creates another generation of problems that could have been addressed earlier.
