VIRGIL VAN DIJK HITS BACK AT DUTCH REPORTER OVER ‘BETRAYED’ ACCUSATION — LIVERPOOL STAR BRUTALLY DISMISSES WORLD CUP CLAIM

Virgil van Dijk was drawn into a tense confrontation during a Netherlands press conference on Wednesday after a Dutch journalist revived a fierce accusation over the national team’s disastrous World Cup campaign.

The Liverpool captain had been facing renewed scrutiny following the Netherlands’ penalty shootout defeat by Morocco in the round of 32, a result that ultimately brought Ronald Koeman’s spell in charge to an end.

Barcelona legend Xavi has since been tasked with turning around the team’s fortunes, with Van Dijk remaining an important part of his plans.

But the defender’s role in the Netherlands’ disappointing tournament has continued to attract criticism.

Back in June, De Telegraaf journalist Valentijn Driessen accused Van Dijk and Koeman of having “betrayed everything our national team stands for”.

Driessen also suggested that Koeman’s decision to switch to a back five had been designed to protect his captain.

On Wednesday, Van Dijk appeared well aware of those previous comments when he found himself face-to-face with Driessen.

Asked what had gone wrong at the World Cup, the Liverpool defender initially offered a measured response before directly addressing the claim that he had pushed for the tactical change.

“Well, it’s easy to say in hindsight: ‘We should have done this differently’ or ‘We should have done that differently,'” Van Dijk said.

“One of your colleagues also said, of course, that it was my idea to switch to playing with a back five. That is utter nonsense.

“The fact is we simply failed at the World Cup; those are the hard facts.”

The exchange became even more uncomfortable when Driessen suggested Van Dijk himself appeared different.

“I feel like you aren’t acting like your usual self,” the journalist said. “A bit curt, as if the media is still getting under your skin.”

Van Dijk immediately pushed back.

“I’ve never had anything against the media, but when nonsense is being sent out there…” he replied.

The defender then returned to the wider criticism of his role in the Netherlands’ problems.

“We didn’t play a good World Cup. It’s not about me. You perform together; you’re a team.

“Your claim that I destroyed Dutch football after the World Cup – that sort of thing is completely baseless…”

Driessen attempted to respond, but the team’s press officer intervened and brought the increasingly tense exchange to an end.

Van Dijk has earned 96 caps for the Netherlands since making his international debut in October 2015 and has served as captain since 2018.

With Xavi now beginning a new chapter for the national team, the Liverpool defender has made one point particularly clear: he accepts the Netherlands failed at the World Cup, but he rejects the suggestion that he was responsible for the team’s wider problems.
