Meghan Markle and Prince Harry respond after King Charles clarifies their royal status

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have broken their silence after King Charles issued formal guidance reaffirming that their return to Britain has not changed their position within the monarchy.

The couple said they were surprised that they had not been given more advance notice of the letter, which was issued by Lord Benyon, the Lord Chamberlain, at the King’s direction.

A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said: “We were a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance.”

The response has created a dispute over when Harry and Meghan were informed, rather than over the substance of the King’s message. Palace sources said Harry’s team received a copy before the letter was released publicly, although reports indicate it was shared with them only shortly before publication.

King Charles confirms there has been no change to the Sussexes’ status

The letter, issued on Monday at King Charles’ request, was circulated to senior figures across government, the military and the Lord Lieutenancies.

It followed requests for clarification after Harry and Meghan returned to Britain with their children.

The central message was straightforward: their return to the UK has not restored them to working royal duties.

Harry and Meghan remain outside the group of royals who carry out official representative duties on behalf of the Sovereign. Their public appearances and charitable activities therefore do not constitute official engagements for King Charles.

Instead, their charitable work is undertaken in a private capacity. The letter describes their position as being “akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”

The clarification is significant because the Sussexes’ return to Britain has prompted renewed questions about how they might conduct public and charitable activities while living in the country.

For the palace, however, the message is that the arrangements established after Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties remain in place.

Harry and Meghan remain the Duke and Duchess of Sussex

The King’s guidance does not remove Harry and Meghan’s titles.

They remain the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, titles bestowed by Queen Elizabeth II when they married in 2018.

Their HRH styles also remain in existence, but they have been placed in abeyance and are not used publicly. That arrangement dates back to the couple’s decision to step away from official royal duties in 2020.

The latest letter therefore does not introduce a new royal status for the Sussexes. Instead, it formally restates the existing position and makes clear that moving back to Britain does not mean returning to official royal service.

Harry remains fifth in line to the throne, while his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, remain sixth and seventh respectively. Their position in the line of succession is separate from whether they are working members of the Royal Family.

Why the timing has become a point of contention

The main source of tension appears to be the timing of the announcement.

Harry and Meghan’s spokesperson said they had not been told about the guidance in advance. Palace sources, however, maintained that the Sussexes’ team had received the letter before it was made public.

Reports said the team received it only around an hour before its release, leaving little opportunity to respond or seek clarification before the contents became public.

That distinction matters because the letter itself does not appear to change the couple’s existing status.

Instead, it puts the position in writing at a time when their return to Britain has generated fresh questions about official engagements, public appearances and the extent to which the Sussexes should be treated differently from private citizens.

Security concerns add another layer to the dispute

The timing of the letter has also attracted attention because Harry and Meghan’s security arrangements are being reassessed following their return to Britain.

The Royal and VIP Executive Committee, known as RAVEC, is responsible for decisions concerning security arrangements for members of the Royal Family and other prominent figures.

Harry lost automatic taxpayer-funded police protection after stepping back from official royal duties. He subsequently challenged the decision through the courts while living in the United States. His return to Britain has now prompted renewed consideration of his security circumstances.

The Sussexes have continued to seek greater protection for themselves and their children while in the UK.

Reports suggested Harry’s camp was concerned that the timing of King Charles’ letter could be connected to the security review. RAVEC was due to consider the family’s circumstances following their move, including whether security arrangements should extend to Meghan and their children.

Palace sources have rejected the idea that the letter was issued to influence the security process.

The two matters therefore remain formally separate. King Charles’ guidance concerns the Sussexes’ constitutional and working status, while RAVEC is responsible for assessing their security arrangements.

Harry’s UK appearances will remain private

Harry has already made public appearances since returning to Britain, including a visit to a London production studio.

That activity does not represent an official royal engagement. Under the King’s latest guidance, any future charity work carried out by Harry and Meghan will likewise be undertaken personally rather than on behalf of the monarch.

The distinction is particularly relevant as the couple settle back into life in Britain. Their move has brought them closer to the institution they left in 2020 while leaving the terms of that departure unchanged.

The palace has effectively drawn a line between living in Britain and representing the King.

Harry and Meghan can continue with their charitable interests and private activities, but those activities will not make them working royals.

What happens next for Harry and Meghan?

For the Sussexes, the immediate frustration appears to concern the way the announcement was handled.

For the palace, the objective is greater clarity.

King Charles’ letter reinforces the boundaries established when Harry and Meghan stepped down from royal duties in 2020. Their titles remain, their place in the line of succession remains, and their charitable work can continue, but they do not carry out representative duties for the Sovereign.

Their return to Britain has therefore changed where the Sussexes live, rather than their formal role within the monarchy.

The next major question concerns security. While the King’s letter settles the issue of their working status, any decision on protection will be a separate matter for the relevant authorities.

For now, the message from Buckingham Palace is clear: Harry and Meghan may be back in Britain, but the royal boundaries established six years ago remain firmly in place.
