Bookish star Mark Gatiss has teased some details about what fans can expect from the new series. The 1940s-set drama about an unconventional bookshop owner who assists police in solving crimes has been a huge hit with fans since it launched last year, with many admitting they could not stop bingeing the episodes and hailing it as “mesmerising”.

It is set to return for series two next month, and Mark – who created the show and also plays the lead character Gabriel Book – has dropped a few hints, reports the Mirror. Speaking to Radio Times, he said some of the secrets would be “unlocked”, but also warned that Gabriel’s marriage could be in trouble.

In the show, Gabriel is gay and wed to his closest friend Trottie, portrayed by Bridgerton star Polly Walker, and the arrangement has proven successful. However, Mark has now suggested there will be some turbulence, explaining: “Their arrangement suits them both, but it’s not without its dangers. We’ll see a bit of that, and we do see a bit more of it fraying at the edges.”

The actor also teased: “Some of the secrets are unlocked and some questions are answered.”

Viewers have been charmed by the series and have been eagerly awaiting the next instalment.

“Binged series 1 in 2 days,” one said on IMDb.com. “Brilliantly written with a great cast… I was mesmerised by how well crafted it was.” “I watched all 6 episodes,” someone else said on Reddit. “Excellent series with well-written characters and great stories. Perfect ‘cosy’ crime.”

Someone else joked on Reddit about not being able to “resist” watching it, and someone else agreed: “Looking forward to a binge!”

Another fan said on IMDb.com that they were “absolutely hooked”, adding: “The writing is incredibly clever, and the cast delivers outstanding performances. This show offers a refreshing take on the classic ‘whodunit’ genre, set against the intriguing backdrop of a post-war world. Typically, I can predict the endings of such shows, but the creative and meticulously crafted storylines have consistently surprised me, keeping me guessing incorrectly.”

Speaking when the second series was confirmed, Mark said: “I’m thrilled that the team at U&Alibi are allowing me to dive back into the world of Bookish and create more fiendish crimes for Gabriel Book and the team to solve.”
