Savannah Guthrie Returns to TODAY After Two-Week Hiatus — and Her Five-Word Response Says It All

Savannah Guthrie's five-word response to TODAY return after two-week hiatus

After two weeks away from the TODAY anchor desk, Savannah Guthrie made her highly anticipated return on Tuesday, September 8, bringing a lighthearted back-to-school moment with her — even as her family continues to face an ongoing and deeply painful situation.

The 54-year-old NBC News journalist returned to the morning show after taking time off to enjoy the final weeks of summer. Reunited with co-host Craig Melvin, Savannah immediately leaned into the back-to-school theme.

“It’s back to school week,” she told Craig, adding, “I’m bringing you a shiny new apple at 7:30am.”

Craig played along, pointing out the highlighter she had with her: “And you’ve got your highlighter there!”

The brief exchange offered a cheerful welcome back for viewers who had been waiting to see Savannah behind the desk again.

Savannah’s return comes during a difficult year

While Savannah’s two-week break gave her time away from TODAY, it also came as the investigation into the disappearance of her mother, Nancy Guthrie, continued.

During her time off, Savannah made her first public appearance outside of TODAY since her mother’s disappearance when she attended a U.S. Open match on Tuesday, August 25, alongside her husband, Michael “Mike” Feldman.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, disappeared from her home in Tucson, Arizona, earlier this year and was reported missing on February 1.

Seven months have now passed since her disappearance, which is believed to have been a kidnapping. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI are jointly investigating the case.

For Savannah, the search for her mother has continued alongside the demands of her career and her role as a mother of two.

Getting her children ready for a new school year

Away from the newsroom and the ongoing investigation, Savannah has also been preparing her children for another school year.

Her daughter Vale, 12, and son Charley, nine, attend school in New York City. Vale is beginning seventh grade this year, while Charley is starting fourth grade.

Savannah previously marked another major milestone for Vale in 2024, when she celebrated her daughter’s elementary school graduation with the emotional words, “When did this happen.”

Now, as Savannah steps back into her familiar place on TODAY, her return comes at a time when both her professional and personal worlds remain closely intertwined.

For viewers, seeing her back at the anchor desk may have felt like a familiar moment of normalcy — but behind the cheerful back-to-school jokes, Savannah continues to navigate a deeply personal family ordeal.
