I, Jack Wright will come to an end this week.

The murder mystery, which has been airing on BBC One and BBC iPlayer throughout July, first debuted in April 2025 on U&Alibi but has been brought to new audiences after being acquired by the BBC.

Written by Chris Lang, known for Unforgotten, Innocent, The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe, the six-part family thriller has been pegged as a “propulsive whodunnit” that starts with the reading of a Will.

The drama follows the fallout after the death of high-powered businessman Jack Wright, played by Trevor Eve, as his many wives and children fight over the remains of his estate. However, things turn even darker when his apparent death by suicide is revealed to be murder. But who did it, and who will receive the inheritance?

In the final episode of season one, DCI Morgan, played by Harry Lloyd, finally charged someone for the murder of Jack Wright after closing in on his prime suspect in the penultimate episode.

However, amid a series of twists and turns, there were multiple arrests in the final episode, all of whom claimed their innocence, and a confession from an unlikely candidate.

Emily Wright, played by Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, and her partner Reuben Maguire, played by Percelle Ascott, were arrested for Jack’s murder after text messages between the pair alluded to them planning it, and the fact that Reuben was found with clothes covered in Jack’s blood.

Emily later explained that the clothes were hers, and the blood was from an argument and a scuffle she had had with her grandfather right before he died.

Police also arrested Jack’s third wife of 17 years, Sally Wright, played by Nikki Amuka-Bird. At the end of the series, both Emily and Sally were in jail, telling their stories and claiming innocence. And while a flash forward revealed Sally had killed a man, it was not Jack.

And if that wasn’t enough, right before the season ended, Emily’s grandmother and Jack’s first wife Rose Wright, played by Gemma Jones, turned up at the station and told officers she killed Jack.

At the end of the series, Rose told the officer behind the desk: “It was me, I killed Jack Wright,” before the series cut to black and the words “to be continued…” aired across the screen.

When it came to inheritance, Sally’s claim was denied as she had cheated on Jack throughout the marriage, which went against a clause in their prenup. With this knowledge, Jack had a DNA test done on their son Josh, and both were swiftly written out of the Will.

Meanwhile, Jack’s sons, Gray Wright, played by John Simm, and John Wright, played by Daniel Rigby, received £5 million each. While granddaughter Emily remained chief executive of the company and kept her shares, which is of little use if she remains in prison.

Will there be an I, Jack Wright season two?

Yes, the cliffhanger has set season two up nicely. Not least because of the “to be continued” announcement, but viewers will be keen to know whether Rose is telling the truth or whether she’s trying to protect her granddaughter.

The second series will see the return of Nikki Amuka-Bird as Sally Wright, John Simm as Gray Wright, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis as Emily Wright, and Daniel Rigby as John Wright. Harry Lloyd returns as DCI Morgan, with new cast members, Tom Austen (Rematch) and Zora Bishop (Hijack) joining.

A synopsis for the second season reads: “The Wrights are back – and deadlier than ever. Still reeling from the death of patriarch Jack, the family are blindsided by the arrest of one of their own for his murder. But have the police got the right person? And more importantly, how could this affect their inheritance payouts? Add in one new family member, two new wills, and three new bodies, and prepare for an explosive return to the twisted world of the Wright family. Thrilling drama starring Nikki Amuka-Bird and John Simm.”

I, Jack Wright season one is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
