A New Season for Kate: The Princess of Wales Steps Back Into the Spotlight
For the Princess of Wales, the start of the new school year has brought more than a familiar family milestone. It has marked a noticeable return to the centre of royal life.
When Kate walked through the gates of Eton College on September 8 alongside Prince William and their eldest son, Prince George, the scene appeared at first to be a simple family occasion. Dressed in a forest-green Emilia Wickstead dress, she chatted with her husband and son, smiled for the cameras and placed a reassuring hand on George’s back as he began the next stage of his education.
Yet the setting gave the moment a significance far beyond the school run.
George, 13, was beginning his education at the prestigious Berkshire school attended by his father and his uncle, Prince Harry. He is also following a path taken by his great-uncle Charles Spencer, the Earl Spencer. William, meanwhile, was returning to the school that formed part of his own childhood and education.
For Kate, the photographs offered another message. After a period in which her health had inevitably drawn much of the public’s attention, she appeared relaxed, composed and increasingly comfortable under the intense scrutiny that accompanies her position.
George’s first day at Eton was carefully managed, with his parents accompanying him as he met headmaster Simon Henderson. The family later released photographs of George in his traditional Eton uniform. The school has a history stretching back nearly 600 years and remains closely associated with Britain’s political and cultural establishment.
A return to public life
The Eton appearance came after a series of engagements that have steadily brought Kate back into view.
On September 11, she made a visit to the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, where she had previously received treatment. During the visit, she met patients and spoke with medical staff, returning to the specialist centre with which her own treatment had been associated.
A day earlier, Kate and William had made an unexpected appearance in Liverpool for World Suicide Prevention Day. The couple unveiled a suicide prevention toolkit, meeting people involved in the initiative and hearing about their experiences.
Kate also used the occasion to wear earrings from Issy Star, a brand created by Sophie McGown in memory of her cousin Issy, who died by suicide in 2023. McGown described the princess wearing the earrings as “completely overwhelming and special” to Hello! magazine.
The engagements have given Kate several very different settings in which to reconnect with the public. At the Royal Marsden, she was speaking with patients and medical professionals. In Liverpool, she was supporting a community initiative. At Eton, she was first and foremost a mother seeing her eldest child begin a new chapter.
That variety is likely to continue through the autumn.
From Eton to the red carpet
The next major appearance will be dramatically different.
On September 22, Kate and William are due to attend the world premiere of Tom Cruise’s Digger at London’s Leicester Square. The event is the Royal Film Performance and is being held in support of the Film and TV Charity. The world premiere is scheduled for Tuesday, September 22, with the event beginning from 4:45pm and a black-tie dress code.
The film is directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and stars Cruise in the title role. The cast also includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons. Digger is due for release in the UK and Ireland on October 2.
For Kate, the premiere will also mean another reunion with Cruise.
The couple last shared a red carpet with the Hollywood star at the London premiere of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. On that occasion, Kate wore a black-and-white off-the-shoulder Roland Mouret gown, while Cruise famously offered his hand to help her up the stairs.
Their return to the red carpet together will therefore revive a memorable royal-Hollywood moment from four years ago.
Kate has long been particularly effective at moving between the different sides of her public role. One day she can appear in practical country clothing for a community engagement; another, she can arrive at a major film premiere in a dramatic evening gown.
Her 2021 appearance at the James Bond: No Time to Die premiere remains one of her most memorable red-carpet appearances, when she wore a gold Jenny Packham gown.
Fashion expert Caroline Baxter has described Kate’s approach to major public occasions as one in which she understands what works for her and generally stays within that formula. Alexander McQueen has become a frequent choice for major royal occasions, while Gucci and Jenny Packham have also featured prominently when she has wanted a more glamorous look.
Baxter also said Kate had emerged from the summer looking “golden, radiant and noticeably more youthful”, adding that she appeared ready to take centre stage once again.
The September 22 premiere is likely to attract particular attention because it comes after such a closely watched period in Kate’s public life.
A busy autumn ahead
The film premiere is only one part of a much fuller autumn schedule.
Earlier this month, William and Kate travelled to the Isle of Bute for their first official visit to the Scottish island. During the trip, they visited Bute Shinty Club and Ettrick Bay, where Kate took part in local activities and met members of the community.
When in Scotland, William and Kate use their Scottish titles, the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay, and the couple also visited the town that shares the name.
The visit provided another glimpse of a more informal Kate. Rather than remaining on the sidelines, she joined in with activities and appeared at ease among local residents.
There is also the prospect of an overseas engagement later in the year.
The Princess is reportedly expected to accompany William to Mumbai in November for the Earthshot Prize ceremony. If it goes ahead as reported, it would mark their first joint overseas appearance in four years.
For William, visibility has also increased as he takes on an increasingly prominent role as heir to the throne. His position as president of BAFTA, which he has held since 2010, gives the Digger premiere an obvious connection to his public work in support of the film industry.
The Royal Film Performance itself is also more than a glamorous evening. The Film and TV Charity uses the event to raise funds for people working across Britain’s film and television industries, making the Leicester Square appearance both a major entertainment event and a charitable engagement.
The Sussexes are back in Britain too
The Waleses’ return to a busier public schedule comes at a moment when attention is also focused on another branch of the royal family.
Prince Harry and Meghan have returned to the UK with their children, Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five. Meghan has shared glimpses of their family life on social media, including countryside walks, fireside moments and time with their children.
That has inevitably created another layer of interest around the royal family this autumn. But Kate’s public schedule is centred on her own responsibilities, from family milestones and charitable work to the larger role she is preparing to assume in the future.
Her appearances have also shown how varied that role can be.
At Eton, she was the mother accompanying her eldest child into a new phase of his life. At the Royal Marsden, she returned to a place connected to an important part of her personal experience. In Liverpool, she supported suicide-prevention work. On Bute, she took part in community activities. And at Leicester Square, she will once again step into the highly photographed world of a major film premiere.
A different kind of confidence
There is a noticeable consistency running through these appearances.
Kate’s public profile has been built over years, but the way she handles intense attention has changed with experience. The photographs from Eton showed a mother navigating an unusually scrutinised family moment without appearing distracted by the cameras around her.
George’s education has attracted considerable public interest, particularly because of the significance of Eton within the family. William and Harry both attended the school, while George’s move there represents a new stage in his education and a significant change for the Wales family. His younger siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, have continued at Lambrook School.
For Kate, however, the images from Eton were ultimately about more than where George goes to school.
They showed a woman increasingly accustomed to occupying a position in which ordinary family moments can become national news.
That is particularly evident in the contrast between the different versions of Kate now appearing in public. At Eton, she was understated and maternal. On Bute, she was relaxed and hands-on. At the upcoming premiere, the expectation will be for something much more glamorous.
Those roles can sit alongside one another because they all form part of the same public life.
The Wales family has entered a new phase. George has begun at Eton, Charlotte and Louis have returned to primary school, and William is becoming more visible in his role as the King’s heir.
Kate, meanwhile, appears to be moving forward with a growing rhythm of public engagements after a challenging period.
Her autumn calendar will bring hospitals, community visits, Scotland, a major international prize ceremony and, on September 22, the bright lights of Leicester Square.
After four years away from a royal film premiere, her return to the red carpet alongside Tom Cruise will be one of the most closely watched moments of the season. The last time the pair met on that stage, Cruise reached out a hand to help her up the stairs.
This time, the attention will be on how Kate chooses to step back into the spotlight.
