Kelly Clarkson’s unforgettable tribute to Dolly Parton at the 2022 ACM Awards carried an emotional weight almost nobody watching at home could have known.
Just 30 minutes before Clarkson walked onto the stage to perform “I Will Always Love You,” she learned that her divorce from Brandon Blackstock had officially been finalized.
Waiting backstage was Parton herself.
Years later, Clarkson says the kindness Dolly showed her during that extraordinary hour is something she will never forget.
“Everything was final, my life, 30 minutes before that performance,” Clarkson revealed during a Sept. 30 appearance on the Las Culturistas podcast. “I found out right before that performance.”
Dolly Had Personally Chosen Kelly for the Tribute
Parton, who died on Aug. 25 at age 80, had personally selected Clarkson to perform her classic song in her honor at the 2022 Academy of Country Music Awards.
That alone created enormous pressure.
“I Will Always Love You” is one of Parton’s signature compositions, while Whitney Houston’s celebrated rendition transformed it into one of the best-selling singles ever recorded.
Clarkson described taking on the song as a “tall order.”
But suddenly, the difficulty of the performance wasn’t her biggest concern.
Her seven-year marriage had officially reached its legal conclusion only moments before she was expected to walk onstage and sing one of music’s most famous songs about saying goodbye.
‘It’s Just Kind of a Wild Moment for Me’

Clarkson had separated from Blackstock in 2020, and their divorce was settled in March 2022.
The former couple share two children, daughter River and son Remington.
Backstage at the ACM Awards, Clarkson found herself trying to process the finality of that chapter while preparing for a tribute that was supposed to be entirely about Dolly.
Parton was standing nearby watching.
Clarkson remembered telling her what had happened.
“I’m sorry, it’s just kind of a wild moment for me, and I’ve got to go out there and do this song,” she recalled saying.
Exactly what Parton told her in response wasn’t revealed in the supplied account, but Clarkson made clear that Dolly’s words arrived precisely when she needed them.
“What she said backstage to me, it was just a really beautiful thing,” Clarkson recalled. “And really helpful.”
Kelly Knew She Couldn’t Break Down on Stage

Clarkson suddenly faced two competing emotional realities.
Privately, an enormous chapter of her life had just closed.
Professionally, she was about to honor one of country music’s most important artists in front of a huge audience.
She reminded herself that the performance wasn’t supposed to be about what she was experiencing.
“Oh my God, you cannot break,” Clarkson remembered thinking. “This moment isn’t about you. This is a tribute to someone.”
At the same time, she described feeling as though an enormous burden had suddenly been removed.
“So much had just been lifted,” she said.
Clarkson ultimately described the entire experience as a “really weird hour.”
Dolly’s presence helped her through it.
“She was very, very cool and I’ll never forget that moment,” Clarkson said.
Dolly Was Fighting Back Tears Too

Clarkson made it through the performance.
But backstage, Parton was having trouble containing her own emotions.
When she later appeared onstage, Dolly praised Clarkson while also remembering Whitney Houston.
“I know that Whitney is smiling down on us tonight,” Parton said. “She would be proud of that.”
Dolly characteristically injected some humor into the emotional moment, joking that she’d been backstage trying not to cry off her false eyelashes.
“That was an amazing job!” she told Clarkson.
For the audience, it was a powerful tribute from one superstar to another.
For Clarkson, the performance had represented something far more personal.
The Timing Still Stunned Her a Year Later
Clarkson later spoke about the remarkable coincidence during a 2023 conversation with Andy Cohen.
Her reaction captured just how surreal it had felt to receive the news immediately before performing that particular song.
“Screw you, universe,” she joked. “That’s the timing?”
Blackstock died in August 2025. Clarkson has since spoken about focusing heavily on the two children they shared.
She recently concluded The Kelly Clarkson Show after seven seasons and released “I’d Be Lyin’” in July, her first new single of the year.
But four years after that ACM performance, one memory remains especially vivid.
It isn’t simply the applause or the challenge of singing one of Dolly Parton’s greatest songs.
It’s the country legend standing backstage with Clarkson at one of the most emotionally complicated moments of her life.
Thirty minutes after learning her divorce was officially over, Kelly Clarkson had to walk onto a national stage and sing “I Will Always Love You.” Before she did, Dolly Parton quietly gave her the words she needed to hold herself together — a moment Clarkson says she will never forget.
