Harry and Meghan Didn’t Leave Britain Without Looking Back — Now Seven Reported Reasons Could Be Pulling Them Home. From Family and Their Children to Career Opportunities and Royal Ties, the Sussexes’ Next Chapter May Be Closer to the Palace Than Anyone Expected.

Why Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Returning to Britain? Experts Point to Six Possible Reasons Behind Their Surprise Move

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s reported decision to return to the UK after six years in California has triggered intense speculation over what may be driving one of the biggest changes in their lives since their royal departure in 2020.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly preparing to relocate before the end of August, with Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, said to have already been enrolled at British schools ahead of the new academic year.

Harry and Meghan are expected to remain non-working royals and reportedly plan to live in a private, non-royal residence outside London.

While the couple themselves have not publicly laid out their reasons for the move, royal commentators have identified several factors that could have influenced the decision.

Meghan’s potential return to acting

One possibility centers on Meghan’s career.

The Duchess was reportedly involved in early discussions about appearing in the third season of Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen, potentially marking a significant return to acting after years away from the profession.

More recent reports have claimed that the proposed casting may no longer be moving forward, although neither Meghan nor Netflix has publicly confirmed her involvement in the project.

Former royal butler Grant Harrold suggested that a UK-based acting opportunity could nevertheless make relocating attractive.

“These jobs can take months, and Meghan won’t want to be apart from Harry,” he told Marie Claire, adding that such a move could be significant for her acting ambitions.

Harry could get more time with King Charles

Family may be an even more important factor.

Harry’s relationship with King Charles has faced considerable strain in recent years, but Harrold believes the Duke may now want to spend more time close to his father as the King continues cancer treatment.

“Despite everything that’s been said, Harry adores his dad,” Harrold said.

Drawing on his own experience working within the royal household, he recalled Harry and Charles sharing a warm relationship in earlier years, frequently making each other laugh.

Being based in Britain would naturally make more regular contact possible.

Could being back in Britain change Harry and William’s relationship?

Archie and Lilibet

The unresolved rift between Harry and Prince William is another potential factor.

Royal commentator Rachel Bowie noted that the brothers have reportedly had little contact for years, with their relationship deteriorating further following Harry and Meghan’s Netflix documentary and the publication of Spare.

William has shown little public indication that he is ready for reconciliation.

But Bowie suggested Harry’s physical return to Britain could alter the dynamic.

“The brothers famously haven’t spoken in years and William especially seems to have zero interest in mending their relationship,” she said.

“But with Prince Harry local again, how long can William avoid the issue? That was perhaps a motive in Harry’s decision to return home.”

Whether William would actually welcome such an opportunity remains unclear.

Harry may simply miss home

Concerns' over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's 'motivations' amid UK return

Despite repeatedly speaking positively about his life in California, Harry has never completely severed his connection to Britain.

Harrold suggested the Duke’s recent visits may have reminded him how much he misses his home country.

“He could, despite everything he’s said, have suddenly thought, ‘Actually, I miss the U.K. I want to come back,’” Harrold said.

“I think the last few trips to the UK may have reminded him just how much he misses being here.”

After six years abroad, returning would represent a dramatic reversal — but not necessarily an inexplicable one for someone whose family, childhood and much of his public life remain deeply connected to Britain.

Archie and Lilibet could be central to the decision

Perhaps the most practical explanation involves Archie and Lilibet.

The children are reportedly due to begin attending school in Britain in September, meaning their parents would have needed to make a major long-term decision about where the family intends to establish its base.

Bowie argued that education is unlikely to have been treated lightly.

“As any parent knows, the choice of school for our kids is not a decision that’s entered into lightly,” she said.

She also suggested growing up and studying in Britain could give Archie and Lilibet a closer understanding of their unusual connection to the monarchy.

The schools they are reportedly set to attend have not been publicly identified.

Keeping Princess Diana’s memory close

Harry’s connection to his late mother may also have played a role.

The Duke visited Althorp House — Diana’s childhood home and final resting place — this summer.

Bowie suggested that living in Britain could allow Harry to share more of Diana’s story with Archie and Lilibet as they become old enough to understand their grandmother’s significance.

It could give Harry the opportunity to “honour her memory more directly and in conjunction with his children,” she said.

The Invictus Games are coming to Birmingham

There is also a major professional commitment approaching.

The Invictus Games will take place in Birmingham in 2027, bringing Harry’s signature project back to Britain.

Harrold suggested being physically based in the UK could make preparations easier and allow Harry to become more closely involved.

“Maybe Harry needs to be on the ground and needs to be here for some of the planning,” he said.

For now, these remain theories rather than confirmed explanations from Harry and Meghan themselves. But taken together — their children’s education, Harry’s family relationships and Invictus commitments, along with Meghan’s potential professional opportunities — they illustrate why a return to Britain could represent far more than a simple change of address.
