A “ridiculous” change to the morning show was spotted within moments of going on air, triggering an immediate backlash as frustrated fans demanded to know why producers had messed with something that wasn’t broken.

BBC Breakfast Viewers Distracted by Major On-Screen Makeover as New Graphics Divide Opinion

Ben Thompson and Sally Nugent hosted Monday's BBC Breakfast

BBC Breakfast returned on Monday, August 24, with a noticeably different look — and it took viewers only moments to start commenting on the changes.

Sally Nugent was joined by Ben Thompson, who stepped in for regular presenter Jon Kay, as the programme covered the day’s major stories. These included Saturday’s Middlesbrough crash, which left seven people dead, including two police officers, as well as the return of the Premier League and a tribute to Kevin Keegan during Newcastle’s match against Liverpool.

But despite the serious headlines, a significant portion of the reaction online focused on something happening much closer to home: the BBC Breakfast screen itself.

BBC Breakfast unveils revamped graphics

The programme introduced a redesigned graphics package, changing several familiar elements viewers had grown accustomed to seeing.

The traditional red timebox and headlines along the bottom of the screen were replaced as part of the makeover. Blue now features prominently in the studio graphics, while information displayed at the bottom uses a red-to-blue gradient and includes details about what is coming up later in the programme.

The changes were immediately noticeable — and not everyone was convinced they were an improvement.

“Can’t the producers decide on ONE colour for graphics?” one viewer wrote.

Another found the additional information distracting, saying: “These captions are annoying, get rid, if I want captions I will turn the subtitles on.”

One viewer compared the new appearance to a smartphone interface: “Why have they tried to make the graphics look like a mobile phone? They look ridiculous.”

Someone else agreed, responding: “That’s what I thought. And I don’t like it.”

Viewers complain the new captions are distracting

A recurring criticism concerned the amount of information appearing on screen while reports were being broadcast.

“I can’t concentrate on two things at once so I’m either trying to read that extremely small text or watching the news report,” one viewer explained.

Another questioned the new colour palette, writing: “Someone been at the crayons.. what’s with the colour scheme?”

Others simply described the appearance as “weird,” while another viewer said they “hated” the change.

One particularly frustrated response claimed the redesign made the programme feel more like its commercial rival, writing: “Might just as well watch ITV now they’ve put this s**t on the screen and dumb down completely.”

The criticism continued, with another person describing the graphics as “really rubbish.”

“Ffs – get rid of these annoying captions! They are very distracting & totally unnecessary!” another viewer posted.

One person also suggested the programme had misunderstood its audience, writing: “#bbcbreakfast have obviously misjudged the demographic of their early morning viewers with this new format.”

BBC Breakfast recently celebrated NTA recognition

The graphics overhaul comes shortly after the BBC Breakfast team celebrated recognition at the National Television Awards.

During an edition of the programme last week, Jon Kay spoke about the team’s reaction after two heartfelt documentaries produced by BBC Breakfast received nominations, saying they were “honoured” by the recognition.

Meanwhile, rival morning programme Good Morning Britain has been nominated in the Daytime category.

It faces competition from James Martin’s Saturday Morning, Loose Women, Scam Interceptors and This Morning.

For BBC Breakfast, however, the immediate conversation among some viewers was less about awards and more about its striking new appearance — with the redesigned captions, colours and screen layout proving difficult for some early-morning audiences to ignore.

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
