19-Year-Old Harmony McKee Stuns The Voice Coaches With Her First Country Performance

Harmony McKee had never performed a country song before stepping onto The Voice stage. That made her choice of Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpowder & Lead” an especially bold one.

The 19-year-old singer from Medina, Tennessee, delivered a performance strong enough to turn the chairs of Riley Green and Adam Levine during the second night of the Season 30 Blind Auditions on September 22, 2026.

What happened after the performance, however, made the audition even more memorable. McKee revealed that country music is not actually her usual lane, setting up an unexpected coaching battle between Levine and Green.

Harmony McKee Takes a Big Musical Risk

McKee chose “Gunpowder & Lead,” a Miranda Lambert song, despite having no background as a country performer. Her audition earned chair turns from both Green and Levine, while Kelly Clarkson and Queen Latifah remained in their chairs.

Then came the surprise.

McKee explained that this was her first time ever performing a country song and that she did not consider herself a country artist. Her musical preferences instead lean toward R&B, rock and blues.

“I’m not a country artist,” she said.

That revelation immediately changed the dynamic between the coaches.

Levine was visibly thrilled. He ran around the studio, hugged McKee and made it clear that her genre background was exactly what excited him about the possibility of coaching her.

“I love that. Makes me so happy,” Levine said.

McKee did have one personal connection to country music. She explained that she had sung “a little Johnny Cash here and there with my granddad.”

That detail caught Clarkson’s attention, particularly because of Green’s own connection to his grandfather and the role that relationship played in his musical upbringing.

Adam Levine Makes His Case

Levine quickly made sure McKee understood why her lack of country experience did not concern him.

“The reason I was so happy is not because I hate country music. I love country music and I love Riley,” Levine said.

He argued that McKee’s voice gave her the freedom to move between genres rather than being confined to one particular style.

“I just think you can do anything. The power in your voice! Honestly, I think you’re one of the stronger singers we’ve heard. You’re a true powerhouse.”

The exchange also brought some playful competition between the coaches, with Levine openly acknowledging his affection for both country music and Green while still making his pitch for McKee.

Clarkson, meanwhile, pointed out that Green did not yet have anyone on his team who sounded like McKee.

“Riley Green don’t have anybody on his team that sounds like you,” Clarkson said. She also noted the connection between McKee learning music from her grandfather and Green’s own musical roots.

Riley Green Connects McKee’s Rock and Blues Roots to Country

When it was Green’s turn to make his case, he focused on the very genres that might have seemed to make McKee an unlikely fit for his team.

Green pointed to Chris Stapleton as an example of an artist who successfully brings blues influences into country music.

“The fact that you love rock and blues, Chris Stapleton’s the best example in the world of taking something that’s very country and putting a blues feel on it,” Green told McKee.

He added that he had no doubt she could do the same and told her that he would love to work with her.

The pitch gave McKee a clear reason to consider Green despite her background in R&B, rock and blues. Her audition had already demonstrated that she could take on a country song, and Green argued that her other musical influences could become part of what made her approach distinctive.

McKee Chooses Riley Green

In the end, McKee chose Green.

The decision produced one of the night’s most awkwardly funny moments.

Instead of the immediate roar of applause Green apparently expected, the room fell noticeably quiet. Green himself did not immediately get up, appearing stunned by the result.

“That’s you!” Clarkson told him.

Once Green realized that McKee had selected him, he turned toward the audience and questioned the lack of an immediate reaction.

“Why aren’t y’all cheering for that? Where did y’all get the audience?”

The moment became another example of the playful rivalry developing between Green and Levine during the early stages of Season 30.

McKee’s choice also gave Green another artist for his growing team. After two nights of Blind Auditions, she was listed alongside Joe Henley, Ferryn & Brinkley and Caroline Alexis on Team Riley.

Green Celebrates Beating Adam Levine

The friendly rivalry with Levine did not end when McKee made her decision.

Speaking to the cameras afterward, Green made it clear that winning the battle for McKee made the moment especially satisfying.

“This victory is pretty sweet, because there’s no better feeling than beating Adam.”

When Green later returned from backstage, the audience did cheer for him. Still, he could not resist joking about the earlier silence.

“Don’t worry about it now. It’s fine,” he said. “Do we swap this bunch out at lunch? What are y’all doing? Now this is a fun show. I want to thank y’all for having me.”

The exchange captured the playful tension surrounding Green’s first season as a Voice coach.

A New Chapter for Team Riley

McKee’s audition was particularly notable because of the contrast between the song she chose and the music she normally performs.

She walked onto the Voice stage as an R&B, rock and blues singer, then used a Miranda Lambert country song to earn two chair turns. Green ultimately convinced her that those different influences could coexist within her music.

Her selection of Green added another dimension to his Season 30 team as he begins his first season as a coach alongside Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine and Queen Latifah. NBC’s Season 30 premiere began September 21, 2026, with the three-night premiere event continuing through September 23.

For McKee, the audition ended with a new coach and a place on Team Riley. For Green, it meant adding a singer whose musical background was very different from the traditional country artist he initially expected to pursue.

And for Levine, it meant losing another singer he clearly wanted.
