If you’re looking for a new crime drama to get stuck into, there’s one series that viewers simply can’t stop recommending. Some fans have even gone as far as saying it’s better than Breaking Bad, with many calling it one of the greatest TV shows ever made.

The series currently holds an impressive 93% average Tomatometer score and an 85% average Popcornmeter rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Each season tells a completely different story, making it an easy series to jump into no matter where you start.

The show is Fargo, the acclaimed FX anthology created by Noah Hawley and inspired by the 1996 film written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen.

First released in 2014, the series features self-contained seasons with different casts, characters and settings, although they all take place in the same fictional universe as the original film.

The stories are usually set across the American Midwest and follow a mix of criminals, police officers and ordinary people whose lives become caught up in unexpected events that quickly spiral into violence and chaos.

Across its five seasons, the cast has included Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Allison Tolman, Kirsten Dunst, Patrick Wilson, Ted Danson, Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Rock, Juno Temple and Jon Hamm.

The series has won widespread acclaim throughout its run, collecting 51 awards from 226 nominations, including seven Primetime Emmy Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, a Peabody Award and multiple Critics’ Choice Television Awards.

One person said in a review on Rotten Tomatoes: “As controversial as this is, I think Fargo is even better than Breaking Bad. It is one of the best, if not the best, show in television history.”

Another added: “The best crime drama you will ever come across. The writing and acting are as good as anything you’ll see on television. I really can’t recommend this show enough. It’s absolutely amazing!”

A third wrote: “Ultimate crime show masterpiece. It’s just an incredible series. Fargo is an absolute masterpiece and one of my favourite shows all time.”

Someone else commented: “This is truly exceptional filmmaking. Every season is masterfully written. Expertly acted and a true masterpiece of American television.”

Fargo premiered on April 15, 2014, and has released five seasons between 2014 and 2024.
