KEITH URBAN WAS WRITING FROM THE HEART WHEN NICOLE KIDMAN INSPIRED A SONG THAT WOULD BECOME FAR BIGGER THAN EITHER OF THEM COULD HAVE PREDICTED.

Keith Urban’s “Once in a Lifetime” Was More Than a Hit — It Was a Love Letter to Nicole Kidman

20 Years Ago, Keith Urban Released a Record-Setting Hit That He Wrote for Nicole Kidman - American Songwriter

When Keith Urban released “Once in a Lifetime” in August 2006, the song arrived at a particularly meaningful moment in his personal life. Just months earlier, Urban had married Nicole Kidman, and the song’s deeply romantic message was inspired by the uncertainty surrounding their relationship before the wedding.

Released as the lead single from Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing, “Once in a Lifetime” immediately made history. It debuted at No. 17 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, surpassing the previous record for the highest debut by a country single.

The song was inspired by Nicole Kidman

Urban co-wrote “Once in a Lifetime” with songwriter and producer John Shanks. According to Urban, the inspiration came from a conversation with Kidman when she was nervous about marrying him.

She reportedly questioned whether their relationship would work, but Urban was convinced they had found something special.

That conversation became the emotional foundation of the song — essentially Urban putting his reassurance into music.

The lyrics center on the idea of finding a rare, once-in-a-lifetime love and refusing to let fear stand in its way. That made the song particularly personal for Urban, who had married Kidman only a few months before its release.

A record-breaking country debut

“Once in a Lifetime” entered the Hot Country Songs chart at No. 17, setting a new record at the time for the highest debut by a country single.

The previous record had been held jointly by Eddie Rabbitt’s “Every Which Way but Loose,” which debuted at No. 18 in 1978, and Garth Brooks’ “Good Ride Cowboy,” which matched that mark in 2005.

Urban’s record, however, would not last long.

In 2007, Kenny Chesney’s “Don’t Blink” debuted at No. 16. Just one week later, Garth Brooks made chart history again when “More Than a Memory” became the first song to debut at No. 1 on the country chart.

What makes “Once in a Lifetime” especially poignant is the story behind it.

At the time, Urban was singing about a love he believed would last forever. He and Kidman had married in June 2006, and the song became closely connected to that chapter of their lives.

Years later, their marriage ultimately came to an end, making the romantic promise behind the song feel very different in retrospect.

Still, the song captures something genuine about the moment it was written: Urban was trying to reassure the woman he loved that their relationship was worth believing in.

That personal history gives “Once in a Lifetime” an emotional weight that goes beyond its chart success — turning what could have been another country love song into a snapshot of one of the most important moments in Keith Urban’s life.
