Josh Hartnett’s Terrifying New Netflix Thriller Is Already Being Tipped As The Streamer’s Next Horror Obsession—And The First Details Are More Chilling Than Anyone Expected. Set In A Remote Fishing Village Where An Unsolved Family Tragedy Collides With A Deadly Creature Emerging From The Sea, The Series Promises Relentless Suspense And Pure Nightmare Fuel. Early Buzz Suggests This Could Be One Of Netflix’s Most Haunting And Unforgettable Thrillers In Years.

This bay is about to make a whole lot of widows.

In Below, “big‑hearted but stubborn” fisherman Calvin Penney (Josh Hartnett) is haunted by his father’s “mysterious” death decades earlier, per Netflix. When an “unidentified sea creature” begins terrorizing his small Newfoundland hometown, “Calvin must fight to hold his close-knit community together.”

The teaser trailer for Below is posted, well, below.

“Determined to keep his son Wade (Charlie Heaton) and the rest of his family safe, [Calvin] teams up with a visiting marine researcher (Mackenzie Davis) to confront the creature and reveal the island’s buried secrets before it’s too late,” the streamer’s synopsis continues. “Blending local myth, thrilling suspense, and heartfelt humour, this twisty six-part limited series dives into themes of family, community, and change — both terrifying and inevitable.”

Remember, this is a Canadian thing — so that “humour” is no typo.

The press materials for Below specify that the series is not supernatural. So there’s, like, a real sea monster here. Also, the note is probably there to point out how it is not Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that: Widow’s Bay recently received 19 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, the most for any new series.) Either way, you’re probably going to want to stay out of the waters north of the Jersey Shore this year — especially when the fog rolls in.

Jesse McKeown is the creator and showrunner of Below. He executive produces with Harnett, Jessica Rhoades (through her company Pacesetter), Chris Hatcher, Jamie Childs, Louise Sutton and Sharon Hall. Below, filed on location in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, also stars Ruby Stokes, Kaleb Horn, Rohan Campbell and Willow Kean.

Below will open TIFF’s (again, Canadian) 2026 primetime program on Sept. 10 — its world premiere. The series debuts on Netflix on Oct. 8.
