After a busy year of filming, Andrew Garfield is ready for a much-needed rest day.
The After the Hunt star, 42, spoke with PEOPLE at a special New York screening of his new movie The Magic Faraway Tree on Wednesday, July 29, and revealed what he would want to do during his perfect day off. Between his new fantasy film and The Uprising debuting later this year, Garfield says he’ll need it.
The actor tells PEOPLE he’d like to spend a free day just lounging and relaxing. “[There’d be] a lot of laying down and looking out my window. Not very active, yeah. I’m in need of some rest right now.”

For his upcoming birthday on Aug. 20 — one day before The Magic Faraway Tree debuts in the United States — Garfield tells PEOPLE he’s planning to adopt a similarly laid-back vibe to celebrate.
“I’ll just do chill things and be with loved ones and eat good food,” the actor says. “I think 43 will be a little chill.”
The Magic Faraway Tree follows “a modern family [who] relocates to the countryside where the children discover a magical tree with eccentric residents,” per the film’s synopsis. “They’re transported to fantastical lands, rekindling their family bond through adventures.”
Alongside Garfield, the fantasy movie stars Nicola Coughlan, Rebecca Ferguson, Claire Foy, Simon Farnay, Billie Gadsdon and Nonso Anozie.
Filming The Magic Faraway Tree was a lovely and lighthearted experience, Garfield tells PEOPLE.
“It was very joyful, and it was very light, and it was very fun,” he says. “We got to support these amazing young actors and have a kind of playful, joyful time. It was nothing too heavy, nothing too serious.”
In contrast, The Uprising, takes on a darker subject matter. Inspired by the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, the film sees Garfield in the role of Ploughman, a farmer mourning the loss of his wife and children to the bubonic plague.
When King Richard II implements unfair taxes on the working class, tensions mount, and Ploughman is thrust to the forefront of the rebellion against the crown.
The Uprising debuts on Sept. 11; The Magic Faraway Tree premieres in the U.S. on Aug. 21.
