A “delightful” period drama has been quietly added to BBC iPlayer.

If you’re not a tennis or football fan, you might want to head to the BBC’s free streaming service to immerse yourself in 1800s England instead.

Mr Malcolm’s List is a 2022 historical drama film directed by Emma Holly Jones and written by Suzanne Allain. The film is based on Allain’s novel of the same name, which was heavily inspired by Jane Austen’s work.

It follows a young woman in 1800s England who helps her friend get revenge on a suitor who rejected her for failing to meet a requirement on his list of qualifications for a bride.

‘I hate my wife’s favourite baby name – it’s sentimental but feels wrong’

‘We found perfect baby name but what our friends did left us torn’

Julia Thistlewaite is jilted by eligible bachelor Jeremy Malcolm, so she enlists her close friend, Selina Dalton, to exact her revenge, leaving Jeremy wondering whether he’s found love or a hoax.

The film is currently available to stream for free on BBC iPlayer, after it aired on BBC Two at the weekend. However, fans don’t have long to watch it, as the listing will expire on Sunday, July 26.

Mr Malcolm’s List was primarily filmed on location in Ireland, ulitilising numerous historic stately homes and scenic estates. Key locations include Newbridge House in Dublin, Powerscourt Estate in County Wicklow, and Castletown House in County Kildare.

The period drama currently boasts an impressive 83% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes from 117 reviews.

Audiences have also lavished praise on the film, with one IMDb user writing: “I truly loved this masterpiece of a film. I’d even go so far as to say it’s better than Bridgerton.”

A third said: “As a Jane Austen fan this was the perfect movie for me. Went with my daughter and she loved it too. Not only is the story good but love the diversity of the cast!”

A fourth viewer echoed the sentiment, saying: “Charming period romp. Mr. Malcom’s List was delightful. I read the book in one day and the movie met my expectations. It was as fabulous as the book. It’s so breathtaking and beautiful.”

Someone else commented: “This is how Persuasion should have been adapted. I love Bridgerton and I love this. Stellar cast. A delightfully effervescent regency romp.”

Meanwhile, another said: “Much like Downton Abbey, the story is nice escapism that makes you wish people still talked and lived so purely.”

Mr Malcolm’s List is available to stream on BBC iPlayer until Sunday, July 26
