Prichard Colón’s boxing career was supposed to be just getting started. Instead, one brutal night in the ring changed everything — and more than a decade later, the former Puerto Rican prospect has died at just 33.

Colón’s death was announced by his father, Richard Colón, on August 13, 2026, bringing a heartbreaking end to one of boxing’s most tragic stories. Reports say the exact medical cause of death has not been publicly disclosed, but his death follows years of severe complications from the catastrophic brain injury he suffered during a 2015 bout.

Before that night, Colón was one of boxing’s brightest young prospects. Born in Florida and raised in Puerto Rico, he won gold at the 2010 Pan American Youth Championship before turning professional in 2012. He won his first 16 professional fights, 13 by knockout, and appeared to be heading toward a major future in the sport.

Then came October 17, 2015.

Colón faced Terrel Williams in Fairfax, Virginia, in a fight that would become infamous. During the bout, Colón was repeatedly struck by illegal punches to the back of the head. He complained during the fight, but the contest continued. Afterward, he became dizzy, vomited and collapsed.

Doctors discovered a serious subdural hematoma, or bleeding on the brain. Colón underwent emergency surgery and spent 221 days in a coma. When he eventually emerged, the devastating neurological damage meant his life would never return to what it had been before the fight. He required extensive care and assistance for years afterward.

His family never stopped fighting for him.

They documented his condition, supported his rehabilitation and pursued legal action over what happened that night. In 2017, the family filed a lawsuit seeking more than $50 million against the ringside doctor and event promoters. The case remained unresolved as of 2026.

For boxing fans, Colón’s story became about far more than a promising career that was cut short. It became a painful reminder of how quickly everything can change inside a ring.

The man who once dreamed of becoming a world champion spent the following years fighting a very different battle — one involving his health, his family and the consequences of a night that changed his life forever.

Tributes have now poured in from across boxing, with major organizations including the WBC, WBA and WBO remembering Colón as a fighter whose courage extended far beyond the ring.

At only 33, Prichard Colón’s story has ended far too soon.

But his legacy may be bigger than the record he left behind. It is a story of extraordinary promise, devastating injury and a family that refused to give up.

And perhaps the most heartbreaking part is knowing that the fighter everyone expected to become a champion ultimately became known for something else entirely: the courage to keep fighting long after the bell had stopped ringing.
