Miracles do happen, it seems. Meghan Markle has actually made a sensible decision. After weeks of the usual tedious, will-they-won’t-they saga regarding whether she and Prince Harry would bring Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, across the pond, we finally have an answer.
The reason for the trip is, of course, the massive one-year countdown events for the Invictus Games coming to Birmingham. This week was supposed to be Harry and Meghan’s grand, joint return to the British stage to kick off the celebrations. But following a predictably dramatic showdown over their lack of state-funded police protection, the plan shattered. Harry was left to face the public music alone. Yet, in another, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it U-turn last night, the Duchess of Sussex has reportedly decided that yes, she will come – but she is going to keep it completely private. No public appearances. No flashing cameras. No curated Netflix-style photo-ops. To which I say, thank goodness for that. For once, Meghan is doing everyone a giant favour.

Let’s be honest here. If Meghan were to step out onto a public stage in Birmingham or London this week, I don’t think she would be met with a sea of waving Union Jacks and crowds cheering her name. She would probably be met with a chorus of boos. The British public has a long memory, and the appetite for endless complaints from a couple who spent years trashing the Royal Family is at an all-time low.
By choosing to stay hidden away in private quarters or visiting Princess Diana’s grave at Althorp out of the camera’s eye, she is saving herself from a humiliating public rejection. It is a rare flash of PR self-awareness from Montecito.
More importantly, though, keeping herself out of the spotlight allows the focus to return to exactly where it belongs – the Invictus Games.
Harry’s work with wounded and sick military veterans is, in my opinion, the most important thing he has done. The upcoming events marking the countdown to the 2027 Games in Birmingham are a big deal. But whenever Meghan is in the frame, the narrative inevitably changes. The focus becomes about her wardrobe, her expressions and the latest chapter in the endless royal soap opera.

The couple’s recent trip to Australia was a textbook example of this. When they visited Bondi Beach to meet with the survivors and first responders of the tragic terror attack, the focus immediately shifted away from the victims. Within minutes of meeting people who had lived through the horrific December 2025, which killed 15 and left many with catastrophic injuries, advertisements and affiliate links promoting the $2,000 (£1,500) designer outfit Meghan wore began popping up on fashion apps.
But by stepping away from the public eye, she is letting the spotlight shine on the brave servicemen and women who actually deserve it.
Yes, it’s a total flip-flop from the spectacle we usually get. Yes, the endless hand-wringing over their security arrangements has been exhausting. But if this U-turn means King Charles finally gets to see his grandchildren in peace, and the Invictus Games get the dignity it deserves without a Hollywood circus side-show, then it’s a win-win.
Keep it private, Meghan. For your sake, and for ours.
