Original Little House on the Prairie cast member Dean Butler is sharing his thoughts on the new Netflix show.
Butler joined the original series, which ran from 1974 to 1983, in season 6 as Almanzo Wilder, who later married Melissa Gilbert’s character, Laura Ingalls.
The show also starred Michael Landon (Charles), Karen Grassle (Caroline), Melissa Sue Anderson (Mary) and twins Sidney and Lindsay Greenbush (Carrie), and primarily was set in Walnut Grove, Minn.
A new Netflix show revives the franchise, but is not a reboot of the ‘70s classic; instead, it more strictly adapts the book series, which follows the Ingalls’ journey to start a homestead just outside the town of Independence, Kan.

In a video posted to Instagram, Butler wrote: “My first thoughts on the new adaptation of Little House on the Prairie! This new Ingalls family really can sing! Now streaming on Netflix. Go check it out!”
Speaking to the camera, he elaborated, saying, “There has been a lot of strong response to the program.”
“Something that I love about the program that I think would have been really fun in the original — which we did not do … is the family singing,” he added. “Writers have rolled in songs that Pa played on his fiddle, and the family is singing along, and they’re doing it beautifully.”
He added, “And this really is the spirit of Laura’s books. She wrote it that way; there was a lot of that in the books. This is a very appealing cast, the show is beautifully produced, pictures are gorgeous. There is a lot of good stuff going on here.”
“But check out the music,” he added. “Love the music.”
Butler added that he’s only gotten through episode four, but urged others to “check it out.”
