Stephen Graham delivers a chilling performance in A Patch of Fog, a British psychological thriller that explores loneliness, obsession and the dangerous secrets people try to keep hidden. Now available on Disney+, it’s a compelling choice for anyone looking for a dark, thought-provoking drama.

The Adolescence star plays Robert Green, a lonely and psychologically unstable security guard whose encounter with a shoplifting celebrity sets off a disturbing chain of events. What begins as an apparently simple bargain soon develops into an increasingly uncomfortable relationship, with Robert’s intentions becoming harder to read.

What Is A Patch of Fog About?

Written around a tense encounter between two deeply flawed characters, A Patch of Fog follows Sandy Duffy, played by Conleth Hill, a once-celebrated novelist who has reinvented himself as a university lecturer and television personality.

Sandy appears to have plenty going for him. He has a public profile, a successful career and a romantic relationship with fellow TV presenter Lucy Walsh, played by Lara Pulver. However, behind his respectable image lies a secret habit: shoplifting.

Sandy’s carefully maintained life is threatened when he is caught stealing by Robert Green, a security guard played by Stephen Graham. Rather than immediately reporting him to the police, Robert proposes a deal. He will keep Sandy’s secret if the novelist agrees to go for a drink with him.

Concerned about being exposed, Sandy accepts. Initially, he sees little reason to worry about Robert’s unusual request, believing that a drink is a small price to pay for protecting his reputation.

That assumption soon proves misguided. Robert’s interest in Sandy develops into an unsettling obsession, and his behaviour makes it increasingly clear that he is far more perceptive than Sandy gives him credit for. What first appears to be a straightforward arrangement begins to take on a much darker tone.

As the story unfolds, the balance of power between the two men becomes increasingly uncertain. Sandy’s attempt to protect his public image leaves him dealing with someone whose attachment to him is anything but innocent.

Why Stephen Graham Was Drawn to the Role

Robert is a particularly intriguing character because his disturbing behaviour is rooted in profound loneliness and isolation. Rather than playing him as a straightforward villain, Graham explores the emotional vulnerability beneath his increasingly obsessive actions.

Speaking to Seensome about the film, Graham explained that the script immediately caught his attention.

“I just read the script and I found it very compelling and really interesting. Just that loneliness and that isolation that we all go through as human beings”, he said.

The actor was especially interested in portraying a man who struggles to connect with other people and becomes consumed by an attachment he cannot manage.

“For me, it was that intriguing element of a man who’s very alone and lost and can’t really find another human being to have an interaction with. The obsessive way that unfolds, I just found it really interesting, a really interesting character to play.”

Graham also described Robert’s fixation on Sandy as something resembling an intense, adolescent love affair. He drew a comparison with the overwhelming emotions that can accompany a first crush, particularly the sense of rejection that follows when someone you care about turns their attention elsewhere.

“It’s kind of a love affair in a way, like when you’re a teenager and you fall in love with a girl, when you’re infatuated with someone and you get dumped, remember that feeling? At the school disco when you find out she’s kissed someone else? Your whole little world collapses and it’s like why? What’s wrong with me? And sometimes you go on the defensive then. So yeah, it’s an infatuation that he has with Sandy.”

That emotional perspective helps explain what makes Robert such an unsettling presence. His behaviour is troubling, but the character is also driven by a deeply personal need for connection, with his obsession taking an increasingly destructive direction.

Graham’s performance, alongside Hill’s portrayal of Sandy, gives the film much of its psychological tension. Both characters have their flaws, and the story becomes increasingly absorbing as their secrets and motivations begin to surface.

Who Stars in A Patch of Fog?

The film features a cast of familiar British and Irish screen performers, led by Stephen Graham and Conleth Hill.

  • Stephen Graham as Robert Green (Adolescence, A Thousand Blows)
  • Conleth Hill as Sandy Duffy (Magpie Murders)
  • Ian McElhinney as Freddie Clarke (Derry Girls)
  • Lara Pulver as Lucy Walsh (MobLand)
  • Arsher Ali as Troy Griffin (Funny Woman)
  • Stuart Graham as Tom Breslin (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy)

Graham’s portrayal of Robert sits at the heart of the film, while Hill provides a compelling counterpart as Sandy, a man whose attempts to protect his reputation leave him vulnerable to someone else’s increasingly troubling attention.

Is A Patch of Fog Worth Watching?

If you enjoy psychological thrillers built around complicated characters and mounting tension, A Patch of Fog is well worth considering.

Graham gives a striking performance as Robert, capturing the character’s instability and loneliness without losing sight of the emotional need driving his obsession. Hill is equally effective as Sandy, a flawed protagonist whose desire to avoid public embarrassment leaves him in an increasingly difficult position.

The film’s appeal lies in the uneasy dynamic between the two men. Their relationship develops through small, uncomfortable encounters rather than relying solely on dramatic twists, allowing the suspense to build as Robert’s true intentions become clearer.

Dark, character-driven and thought-provoking, A Patch of Fog offers a different kind of thriller for viewers who prefer psychological tension to straightforward action. It is also an opportunity to see Graham take on a role that explores the more troubling side of human loneliness and emotional attachment.

What Other Stephen Graham Dramas Can You Watch?

If A Patch of Fog leaves you wanting more of Graham’s work, there are other dramas to explore, including a period thriller and a dark detective series.

The Secret Agent

For viewers who enjoy period dramas with an espionage angle, The Secret Agent offers a different setting and story.

Adapted from Joseph Conrad’s classic thriller, the drama takes place in London in 1886. Toby Jones plays Verloc, who operates a seedy shop in the heart of Soho while secretly working as an agent of the Russian Embassy.

His covert activities are not likely to remain hidden forever, particularly with Stephen Graham playing Chief Inspector Heat of Scotland Yard’s Special Crimes Division.

Bodies

For something darker, Bodies follows four detectives living in different historical periods who investigate the appearance of the same body in a street in London’s East End.

The series brings together crime and mystery across different eras, making it another option for viewers drawn to unsettling stories and intricate investigations.

Whether you choose the historical intrigue of The Secret Agent, the multi-era mystery of Bodies or the psychological tension of A Patch of Fog, Graham’s screen roles offer plenty for drama fans to discover.
