What Is the Story About?

The American crime thriller is based on Harlan Coben’s 2023 novel of the same name. It centres on David Burroughs, played by Sam Worthington, a former law professor serving a life sentence for the murder of his three-year-old son, Matthew — a crime he insists he did not commit.

While David is behind bars, his wife Cheryl, portrayed by Erin Richards, leaves him and eventually marries someone else. Five years into his imprisonment, however, an unexpected visit gives David a reason to question everything he thought he knew about his son’s fate.

His former sister-in-law, Rachel Mills (Britt Lower), is an investigative journalist who brings him a photograph showing a young boy with a distinctive facial birthmark matching Matthew’s. The discovery raises the possibility that his son may still be alive.

Determined to uncover the truth, David makes a daring escape from prison. His goal is not only to clear his name but also to find Matthew and discover what really happened.

The search soon draws him into a dangerous web of secrets, conspiracy and an apparent cover-up, with the truth becoming increasingly difficult to uncover.

A Harlan Coben Adaptation With a Strong Cast

The miniseries stars Sam Worthington alongside Britt Lower, Milo Ventimiglia and Erin Richards. It premiered on June 18, 2026, bringing another of Harlan Coben’s suspense-driven stories to the screen.

Coben’s novels have provided the foundation for numerous mystery adaptations, and this series follows the familiar ingredients of his storytelling: a seemingly straightforward disappearance, a family devastated by tragedy and revelations that gradually reshape the investigation.

All eight episodes are now available on Netflix UK, giving viewers the chance to follow David’s search for his son from beginning to end.
