Prince William and Kate Middleton Brave Belfast Rain on Surprise Northern Ireland Visit

BELFAST — The Prince and Princess of Wales arrived in South Belfast on Friday for an unannounced royal away day focused on tackling homelessness, navigating wet autumn weather under tight security measures.
Known locally by their Northern Irish titles, Baron and Baroness Carrickfergus, Prince William and Princess Catherine spent the day engaging with local leaders, community projects, and members of the public. The trip marked the Princess’s first time joining her husband on an official visit for his Homewards initiative.
“I am bringing her to see a one-stop-shop on homelessness today,” Prince William told their hosts upon arrival.
High-Profile Welcome at The Commons

The couple’s first stop was The Commons, an innovative initiative transforming a former church on Ormeau Road into a community hub.
Braving a persistent drizzle, the Princess arrived in an Emilia Wickstead ensemble featuring a belted green tartan skirt, a white ruffled blouse, a tailored overcoat, and an intricate Celtic knot half-up hairstyle. She carried a black umbrella and wore Princess Diana’s iconic sapphire engagement ring alongside a matching green clutch.
Outside the venue, they were formally welcomed by:

-
Emma Little-Pengelly, Northern Ireland’s Deputy First Minister
-
Róis-Máire Donnelly, Mayor of Belfast
-
Claire Hanna, MP for South Belfast and SDLP leader
Greeting the royals in the rain, Deputy First Minister Little-Pengelly quipped that the local weather “wasn’t playing ball.”
Community Walkabout and Personal Moments
As news of the secret visit spread across South Belfast, hundreds of locals gathered outside the centre. William and Catherine spent time shaking hands, taking selfies, and greeting young families. In one memorable interaction, Prince William jumped on a FaceTime call with the mother of a spectator waiting in the crowd.
The Princess also stopped to chat with local schoolchildren. When a young boy asked about her family, Catherine replied warmly: “Thank you for asking. I have George and Charlotte, and the little one is called Louis.” She also mentioned that Prince George had recently begun classes at a new school.
Spotlight on Youth Employment at IKEA

The itinerary concluded with a tour of IKEA Belfast, which partners with NEON (Homewards’ New Employment Opportunities Network) to provide viable job paths for young adults at risk of housing instability.
Inside, the royal couple joined roundtables with senior representatives from major UK corporate partners—including B&Q, Specsavers, and Howdens—to review ongoing efforts linking vulnerable young people directly to steady employment.
The trip represents the Prince and Princess’s first joint visit to Northern Ireland since October last year.
